Female Genitalia & Plastic Surgery: Objectifying Women?

[While this article does not technically fit in the abortion section, it relates because of the trend to force or pressure women to become objects of sexual gratification.]  Female Genitalia Newest Target, Trend for Plastic Surgery Women must take a stand against objectification in the culture and world today Experts are alarmed that the newest trend in cosmetic procedures is designer vaginas, which many women seek after watching pornography in the hopes that it will improve their sex lives.   "It runs the risk of redefining beauty as that which is only 'skin deep', as opposed to its higher reality: a reflection of and a participation in inner beauty" said Johnette Benkovic, author.   About 800 so-called "vaginal rejuvenation" procedures were performed in 2005, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a tiny figure compared with the 320,000 liposuctions performed annually. But doctors who offer the procedures have received prominent media attention and the practice is expected to grow.   There are three categories of vaginal cosmetic surgery, said Dr. Thomas Stoval of the American Society of Gynecological Surgeons. The first is vaginal rejuvenation, in which a laser is used to stimulate collagen growth and tighten the vagina. The second is revirgination, a surgery that reconstructs the hymen. The final is labiaplasty, a surgical procedure in which the labia are reduced in size.   Vaginal rejuvenation and revirgination are never medically necessary, Stoval said, and there is no scientific evidence that the procedures make sex more enjoyable. Labiaplasty is necessary in rare circumstances. The procedures can cost up to $10,000.   Objectifying Women Dr. Kathleen Raviele [vice president, CMA;...

US Human Trafficking and the Canada Connection

US Human Trafficking Report Calls Canada the ‘Transit and Destination’ for Sexual Slavery Trade The US State Department has issued its 2007 report on human trafficking and has named four wealthy US Arab allies – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar – as among the worst offenders in failing to act to stop the international trade of human beings. The report listed Canada as a “tier 1” country, one that complies with the minimum standards of combating the trade. It describes Canada as “principally a transit and destination country” for women and children trafficked, mainly from Asia and Eastern Europe, for commercial sexual exploitation. It noted “some Canadian girls and women are trafficked internally for commercial sexual exploitation”. The State Department estimates that as many as 800,000 people are trafficked over international borders for purposes of labor or sexual exploitation every year. 80 per cent of these are women and girls and as many as half of the total are minors. Sexual exploitation of women and children, both boys and girls, is a prominent and universal feature of the report. In addition to the four wealthy Arab countries, the report lists Algeria, Equatorial Guinea and Malaysia Cuba, Iran, Myanmar (the former Burma), North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Uzbekistan and Venezuela, all either predominantly Islamic, communist or heavily socialist military states, in the bottom, third tier. In total, 32 countries are named in the third tier. Third tier countries face possible economic sanctions from the US including the loss of US aid and support for World Bank and International Monetary Fund loans. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice described the trade...

Ohio Sees Death of 2nd Unborn Child in Attack on Pregnant Mother

The state of Ohio has experienced another case of the death of an unborn child in an attack on the baby’s mother. This latest case comes shortly after the state received national attention when a Canton police officer killed his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn baby, who was days away from birth. Channel 5 news reports that 15 year-old Alfonzo Price and a friend beat up his 18 year-old girlfriend Kerria Anderson early Thursday while she was walking along a street with her one year-old daughter. “She said the guy that was with her hauled off and hit her in the face,” Betty Payne, the victim’s grandmother, told the television station. “While he hit her in the face, the other guy came in and jumped on her, too.” Price and his friend dragged Anderson behind a building and beat her and stomped on her stomach. After the attack, Anderson found a security guard in a nearby building and called police. “She’s five months pregnant, she has bruises everywhere, they just jumped her, like three guys had just jumped her,” the guard told the 911 operator, according to the news station. “She knows one of them, it’s her baby’s daddy. Well, the unborn child’s father. And I guess it was over her not getting an abortion or something like that.” Anderson was reportedly hospitalized for bruises and other injuries but her baby died as a result of the attack. Her family said she confirmed Price attacked her because he is the father of her baby and she refused his request to have an abortion. Ohio is one of 35 states...

Stem Cells, Abortion, Baby Parts, & the Ukraine

June 2007 http://www.hli.org/sr_june_07.pdf   Ukrainian trafficking in baby parts—Reported by Brian Clowes, March 2007: The trafficking of baby parts in the Ukraine & the Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Barbados. This follow-up report exposes the horrific industry that connects these distant locales. The March 2006 HLI Special Report described how John Fusto and I visited Barbados in 2005 and exposed the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, or IRM. The doctors at this facility claim on the IRM Website that they can completely cure or ameliorate every disease or injury known to man — including spinal cord trauma, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and diseases of the liver, nervous system, blood, heart, and bowel. The IRM has gone a long way towards fulfilling its promise to make Barbados the “Embryonic Stem Cell Capital of the World.” It imports aborted baby parts from Ukraine, liquefies them into a kind of “preborn pureé,” then injects them directly into the arms or body organs of customers. According to the IRM, these cells use a kind of “radar” to seek out diseased or damaged cells in the patient’s body and repair them. The IRM claims an astonishing 96% improvement rate in curing virtually every disease ever recorded. Rich English and American women find their way to this remote complex (at their own expense, of course), and are injected with fetal stem cells at $25,000 per session. Barnett Suskind, CEO of the IRM, says that “It’s the most natural form of healing there is. You think better, sleep better, look better. Your quality of life improves and your libido certainly improves.” Only the Beginning...

China’s Southwest Provinces See Thousands Riot Over Forced Abortions

Thousands of Chinese residents have been rioting in southwest China over the last few days as citizens confront local officials over a campaign of forced abortions there. The protests began after family planning authorities began forcibly aborting women for violations of the nation’s one-child population policy. As LifeNews.com has previously reported, Chinese family planning officials in Guangxi province forced at least 61 women in April to have abortions as late as seven and nine months into pregnancy. Women said were forced to have abortions because they were unmarried, while other women were married and pregnant with their second child. The abortions have all occurred at the Youjiang District People’s Hospital of Baise City, where local officials denied the forced abortions were occurring. Because of the alleged violations of the family planning policy, officials in Guangxi recently increased fines for offenders and began seizing or destroying the property of people who cannot pay the fines. Officials have issued fines from 500 yuan, or about $65, to 70,000 yuan, or about $9,000, on families who violated the policy at any time since 1980. But some of the citizens of the area say the fines were instituted even on people who had already paid them. However, failure to pay the fines is leading officials to destroy homes of those who don’t cough up the money. Responding to the government’s actions, local people in Guangxi overturned cars and set fire to government buildings and riot police entered at least four towns in the province to suppress the protesters. Teen Stabs Her Newborn Child 135 Times (4/07) / When Will We Make the Connection?

In our "throw-away" society, where to so many people, human life has lost its intrinsic value, a teen has stabbed her Newborn Child 135 times… The violence of abortion begets violence… Bail set at $1 million for teen accused of baby murder.  A 17-year-old stabbed her newborn baby 135 times and disposed of her body in a garbage can outside her home in Oakdale. The girl was charged with first-degree murder. The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. She was being held in a juvenile detention facility. Johnson noted that the state's safe harbor law allows mothers to leave infants at any hospital within 72 hours of birth with no legal consequences. "She could have walked away and the baby would have been adopted by a family that wanted it. Instead she destroys two lives: her own and the baby's," he said. [AP, http://www.kstp.com/article/stories/S53980.shtml?cat=1] ABORTION, PARTIAL-BIRTH ABORTION, INFANTICIDE, CHILD ABUSE — WHEN WILL WE MAKE THE CONNECTION? Where It Can Lead — There Is A Path "There is a path that seems right to a man, but it's end is destruction." The path we stepped upon when abortion became legal is not stopping with abortion. Newsweek [12/6/96] reported that FBI statistics indicated 207 children younger than a week were murdered in 1994. That is a 92 percent increase since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1973. Here are some examples: Iowa. The body of a newborn baby girl was found in a campground. She had died of exposure. The 12-year-old mother was not charged. [Did anyone investigate this for incest or statutory rape?] New York. A...

UCLA Psychiatrist: Abortion Hurts Women (12/06)

Forced Abortion in America http://www.theunchoice.com/pdf/FactSheet/ForcedAbortionReportAdvanced.pdf       UCLA Psychiatrist: Profession Must Acknowledge Abortion Hurts Women; more should be done to help women who suffer from mental health problems following an abortion. While not acknowledging the full range of problems women suffer, she said the mental health profession needs to acknowledge that large numbers of women have serious post-abortion issues. Dr. Miriam Grossman sat down with Kathryn Jean Lopez of National Review for an interview about her latest book, Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student. Grossman says the wrote the book in part to "highlight the existence of an invisible group: women (and men) with emotional scars from an abortion." She also criticized leading groups of health care professionals for denying that large numbers of women experience problems following an abortion. "They are out there in numbers; many must seek support from networks outside our mental-health system," she said. "This is because although individual practitioners may be sensitive to the trauma of abortion, the mental-health establishment denies it exists." As a psychiatrist, Grossman criticized "the refusal of my profession to formally acknowledge and reach out to those who suffer with severe emotional disorders following an abortion." The Violence of Abortion (updated)

Forced Abortion in America http://www.theunchoice.com/pdf/FactSheet/ForcedAbortionReportAdvanced.pdf     Abortion is a violent act. It breeds violence in society. Here are just a few examples:    Babysitter Sentenced in Abortion Trauma Death An Iowa babysitter who claimed that post-abortion trauma led her to kill a toddler by slamming him on the floor has been sentenced to 50 years in prison. Tifany Meyers, 19, pled guilty in October to second-degree murder in the death of 21-month-old Joel Vasquez. She later asked for a new trial on the grounds that her depression over an abortion she had only days before Vasquez's death prevented her from understanding her constitutional rights. The judge denied the request for a new trial. * * * Doctor Pleads Guilty in Abortion Injection Case A New York doctor has pled guilty to attacking his pregnant girlfriend outside a Bronx hospital and injecting her with methotrexate, an abortion-inducing drug, in an attempt to end her pregnancy. As part of a plea agreement, Dr. Stephen Pack admitted attacking Joy Schepis last April and injecting her with the drug, but he will serve no more than three years in prison for the incident. Schepis gave birth to a healthy baby boy in late November. * * * Woman Will Serve No Jail Time in Forced Abortion Case A Florida woman who forced her 15-year-old daughter to go to an abortion clinic at gunpoint will not serve any time in jail or have a criminal record. Glenda Dowis, 42, was sentenced to two years' community service and three years' probation as part of a plea agreement. Dowis was arrested after telling an employee...

Missouri Abortion Centers will be charged with Felony for Failing report Underage Sex (6/06)

On 5June06, Missouri Gov. Blunt signed into state law measures that not only toughen punishments for sexual offenders, but also those who help or conceal them or their crimes. The law also strengthens the public database of sexual offenders, making it a simple task to report sexual offenders or obtain information on them. The newly signed bill also denies the defense of consent in the case of a victim of a sexual crime under 12.   "We're sending a message to sexual predators that in Missouri we take this seriously," said Gov. Blunt, who has dedicated two days to traveling to cities in Missouri to raise awareness about the new law.   Besides toughening laws against sexual offenders themselves, Gov. Blunt’s new law makes it a felony if a person, or an organization, including abortion clinics, omit to inform the authorities if someone they know is a sexual offender, or if they help that person hide from the authorities. This may portend huge ramifications for Planned Parenthood, which was exposed in the past few years to have actively engaged in cover-up and cooperation with sexual offenders who had committed statutory rape. In 2002, Life Dynamics Inc. (LDI), a Texas based pro-life group, conducted a covert study on 800 abortion clinics, revealing that 91% agreed to conceal evidence of statutory rape (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2002/may/02052101.html), prompting investigations in two states (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2002/jun/02060603.html ). At the time Mark Crutcher, LDI's president, reported that "among girls 15 and younger who get pregnant, 60-80 percent are impregnated by adult men. [Life Dynamics] investigation has uncovered irrefutable evidence that both Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation-often operating...

"How Can They Call It A Choice?"

Forced Abortion in America http://www.theunchoice.com/pdf/FactSheet/ForcedAbortionReportAdvanced.pdf      64% involve coercion ● up to 83% are not wanted by the women pressed to have them 84% were not given enough information to make an informed choice "I don't know why they call it a choice." –Denise It was never really about "choice," was it? Most abortions are unwanted. After decades of deceptive counseling, non-support and coercive tactics … it's clear that women are not the ones making the "choice." Consider these real life examples:  the physician who leaned across his mahogany desk and snapped, "It's not a baby!!  the boss who said he'd push his employee down the stairs if she didn't abort  the pastor who assured the young woman's family that abortion was okay  the school counselor who said, "Someday, you'll look back on this and laugh"  the nurse who said, "This is no time for questions!" At UnFairChoice.info, you will discover the stories of women who were lied to by experts or pushed, and even forced, into a "choice" they didn't want. Abortion cannot honestly be equated with "choice"! Abortion is actually the UnChoice. … Unwanted. Unsafe. Unfair. Do you realize how much the abortion industry fears this message? The UnChoice ad campaign exposes the truth of abortion's unparalleled harm to the very women abortionists said it would help. It uses the heartfelt voices of real people, backed with the hard-hitting impact of the latest peer-reviewed medical research. UnChoice ads expose well-guarded secrets: that abortion is not safe … it is destructive.  Abortion is the nexus for deception, coercion, abuse or repeat molestation, and post-abortion grief, injury and suicide. Pregnant Women Murdered by Their Partners After Refusing Abortion

OH Police Officer Cutts Sentenced for Murder of His Unborn Baby and Her Mother On 27Feb08, a jury recommended that Canton OH police officer Bobby Cutts be sentenced to life in prision without parole, for 34 years. Cutts murdered his 9-month yet-unborn daughter Chloe, and her mother Jessica. [Right to Life, www.cincinnatirighttolife.org. Cincinnati Right to Life, April 2008] *** West Virginia Man Indicted for Killing Pregnant Girlfriend, Unborn Child A West Virginia man is the second person to be indicted under a law that provides protection and justice for pregnant women and their unborn children. The state’s unborn victims law, one of three dozen across the nation, allows prosecutors to hold criminals accountable for killing or injuring both mother and child. James Louis DeGasperin, a 35 year-old teacher from Preston, is charged with killing his 25 year-old girlfriend Lori Casteel and her unborn child. Casteel, her son Collin, and her unborn baby, were all killed when DeGasperin hit her with a baseball bat and then killed Collin with a shotgun blast. In addition to his indictment on first degree murder in the deaths of Casteel and Collin, DeGasperin was indicted for first degree murder in the death of the baby as well because Casteel was six months pregnant at the time. That can happen because the West Virginia legislature, in 2005, approved Senate Bill 146 and it became law that May when Gov. Joe Manchin signed it. Under the statute, “a pregnant woman and the embryo or fetus she is carrying in the womb constitute separate and distinct victims” for purposes of the state laws governing murder, manslaughter, and...

Suicide Rate Among Young Women Tripled in Past 25 Years (NIH)

Forced Abortion in America http://www.theunchoice.com/pdf/FactSheet/ForcedAbortionReportAdvanced.pdf (updated April 2010)     A report released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that the suicide rate among teen girls and young women has tripled in the past 25 years, despite an overall drop in suicide rates across the United States. NIH reports that suicide is now the third leading cause of death among American young people, and the sixth leading cause of death for children between the ages of 5 and 14. Some mental health experts attribute the increased rate of suicide among girls and young women to broken relationships and promiscuity. Elliot Institute director Dr. David Reardon said that evidence shows that abortion is also contributing to the increase in suicides. An Elliot Institute study published in Aug. 2003 in the Southern Medical Journal found that women who had abortions were seven times more likely to commit suicide than women who gave birth.  "Given the fact that more than half of all women having abortions are under the age of 25, and more than 20 percent of women having abortions are teenagers, the increased suicide rate among teens and young women is sadly not a surprise," Reardon said. Reardon said that teens and young women often undergo unwanted abortions because they are being pressured by their boyfriend or parents. Studies have shown that as many as six of ten abortions are unwanted. In one Elliot Institute survey of women experiencing post-abortion problems, more than 80 percent said they would not have aborted if they had received support from others to have their babies.   "Even if their families might...

Coerced Abortions = Domestic Violence

Forced Abortion in America http://www.theunchoice.com/pdf/FactSheet/ForcedAbortionReportAdvanced.pdf (updated April 2010)   COERCED ABORTIONS: TALKING POINTS Coerced Abortions = Domestic Violence A major poll of women's concerns, commissioned in 2003 by the pro-abortion Center for the Advancement of Women (CAW), found that fewer than one-third of Americans (30 percent) believe abortion should be generally available. A major poll of women's concerns, commissioned in 2003 by the pro-abortion Center for the Advancement of Women (CAW), found that fewer than one-third of Americans (30 percent) believe abortion should be generally available. Fifty-one percent had a strongly restrictive opinion, with 17 percent favoring a total ban on abortion and 34 percent saying it should be allowed only in cases of rape or incest or to prevent the death of the mother. CAW president Faye Wattleton, former president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, admitted that the poll confirms a steady decline of support for abortion among women. Indeed, the poll found that keeping abortion legal was the next to last most important priority for women.   Preventing domestic violence was the most commonly supported concern (92 percent), followed by equal pay for equal work (90 percent). By contrast, only 41 percent gave any priority to the goal of "preserving abortion rights." Having more time off work to care for family (74 percent); reducing drug and alcohol addiction (72 percent); and increasing women's study of math, science, and technology (66 percent) all garnered much more support than abortion.   The CAW poll shows that American women are far more concerned about stopping domestic violence than they are with promoting abortion. Therefore, linking coerced abortions to domestic...

Violence to Pregnant Women

This document is positive proof that the pro-abortion mentality numbs the human conscience. You can print it out and use it during debates and call-in shows, as well as for research purposes. It is a list of known murders committed by abortionists and other pro-abortionists. They have tortured, raped and murdered not only their wives and pregnant girlfriends, but also small children and even newborn infants. It is very important to note that none of these incidents is a simple crime of passion. They are all carefully planned and premeditated, and every one of them shows a depraved indifference to human life and degenerate joy in human suffering. Older people cannot recall instances when men would murder their wives and girlfriends for not getting abortions before it was legal. But now, the women who died at the hands of illegal abortionists are now dying at the hands of the men who made them pregnant. The message is clear: If you are pregnant and want your baby, and your boyfriend or husband is `pro-choice,' watch him carefully. Never turn your back on him, or it may be the last thing you ever do. The most hideous murders of all are preceded with a pound mark (#) instead of an asterisk (*). The descriptions preceded by a pound mark are truly repulsive, and those with tender hearts or stomachs really should avoid reading them, because they describe the hideous and pitiful pro-abortion torture, rape and murder of pregnant mothers, many in their last month before delivery… *  ANDERSON: In November 1999, Pasadena abortionist Kevin Paul Anderson strangled his business partner, neonatologist...

Secret Births

Stephanie C. was only looking for a pair of her daughter's pants when she opened the closet door. Imagine her surprise at finding a tiny newborn baby nestled in a blanket. "I screamed in surprise," she later told reporters. "I called 911. They said, 'Whose baby is it?' I said, 'I have no idea.'" It turned out that the baby was her grandson, Navorn. Her 17-year-old daughter, Shanta, had concealed her pregnancy and secretly given birth to her baby boy in her home on September 21, 1997. She had hidden the baby in her bedroom closet whenever she left for school. It was 17 days after the birth before the startled grandmother first met her grandson. After being charged with neglect, Shanta was given custody of Navorn on the condition that she move into a home for young mothers. The 16-year-old father of the child came forward seeking to establish paternity and to strengthen his relationship with Shanta, which he described as previously an "on again, off again" romance. The media spin on the birth of the "closet baby" Navorn suggested that teenagers can be unaware of their pregnancies for long periods and may engage in denial of reality until it is "too late." Teenage "denial" is often blamed for late-term abortions. The argument goes that teenagers have trouble confronting the reality of their problem and so fail to seek an earlier, "safer" abortion. Because of this "denial" problem, pro-abortionists argue, we must keep late term abortions available for these "messed up" kids. Personally, I've never bought this argument. Certainly it is not uncommon for teenage mothers to go...

Sex-Selection Abortion and Infanticide

“The Slaughter of Eve”: Sex-Selection Abortion and Infanticide Help Explain 200 Million “Missing Women” As a result of sex-selection abortion, female infanticide, and other violence against women, the world is missing some 200 million women from its population figures, according to a recent report delivered to the United Nations. The report, titled “Women in an Insecure World,” was produced by the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF). It was released on November 17, 2005, and employs data and statistics gleaned from UN sources. An executive summary of the DCAF report, available at http://www.dcaf.ch/women/pb_women_ex_sum.pdf, states that … up to 200 million women and girls are demographically “missing.” The euphemism hides one of the most shocking crimes against humanity. Given the biological norm of 100 new-born girls to every 103 new-born boys, millions more women should be living amongst us. If they are not, if they are “missing,” then they have been killed, or have died through neglect and mistreatment. Some of these women are victims of domestic violence, some are girls who simply fail to receive the food or medical care given their brothers. However, the report indicates that substantial numbers are killed because of gender or sex selection abortions or infanticide. According to the report, Amartya Sen, the 1998 Nobel Laureate for Economics, estimates that more than 60 million women are missing from world population figures as a result of sex selection abortions and infanticide practiced in China, South Asia, and North Africa. The executive summary declares, Infanticide has been practised throughout human history in societies where boy children are valued, economically and socially, above...

State Department Reports on Forced Abortions in China, North Korea (4/05)

The Bush administration has released a report detailing the abuse of women in China and North Korea as a result of coercive and forced population control policies, including forced abortion, sterilizations, and infanticide. The report, released by the state department, says that in China, “violence against women, including imposition of a coercive birth limitation policy that resulted in instances of forced abortion and forced sterilization, continued to be a problem” in 2004. The report also documented specific cases of injuries, torture, and imprisonment of women, including the case of a woman who committed suicide after her relatives were detained in “population schools:” designed to compel them to accept the one child policy. The report noted that the government prohibited the use of such schools as detention centers, but said that the human rights violation continues despite government claims they are cracking down on abuses. The state department also reported on conditions in prisons and detention centers in North Korea, stating “pregnant female prisoners reportedly underwent forced abortions, and in other cases babies reportedly were killed upon birth in prisons.” North Korean defectors have reported that pregnant women fleeing the one-child policy in China are often tortured and that women repatriated from China are forced to watch as their newly born children were killed. “The reason given for this policy was to prevent the birth of half-Chinese children,” the report said. The North Korean government has refused to allow human rights monitors to visit prisons there and one delegate told the U.N. that reports of abuses were propaganda from “egotistic” and “hostile forces” seeking to undermine the country’s sovereignty. [Elliot...

China Will Ban Sex-Selection Abortions to Curb Gender Imbalance (1/05)

Just one day after hitting the 1.3 billion population mark, Chinese officials say they will ban sex-selection abortions in order to curb the growing gender imbalance problem caused by the country’s coercive one-child population control policy. According to the 2000 census, there were about 117 males to 100 females in China and the latest government statistics show it at 119 to 100. For second births, occasionally allowed in rural areas, the national ratio was about 152 to 100. The average rate worldwide is 106 boys born for every 100 girls and girls are born more often than boys in some industrialized nations. Zhang Weiquing, a minister in charge of family planning, told the official Xinhua news agency, “The government takes it as an urgent task to correct the gender imbalance of newborns.”[7Jan05, http://www.lifenews.com/nat1092.html, Beijing,...

The Tuskegee Scandal: An Analogy

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study is a tragic episode in the history of the U.S. government’s top health agency, the U.S. Public Health Service. The scandalous study is reminiscent of the gruesome practices of the notorious Joseph Mengele, the Nazi physician who conducted monstrous experiments on Jews imprisoned in concentration camps. The scandal demonstrates that U.S. government funded scientists are not incapable of performing similar atrocities. Scientists working under the auspices of the agency conducted the study on 399 unsuspecting syphilitic African American men and 201 healthy men between the years 1932 and 1972. These scientists wanted to record the natural history of syphilis, so they lied to these poor, black sharecroppers about their diagnosis. They told the men they were being treated for “bad blood.” Although penicillin was successfully used to cure syphilis starting in 1945, the men weren’t treated for their disease at all. The disease was passed unwittingly to the infected men’s wives and (congenitally) to their children. Untreated syphilis can result in tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death. The sick men were misled about the purpose of painful spinal taps, which they endured yearly. They were told that the “back shots” were needed for therapeutic purposes. In reality, scientists conducted spinal taps for the purpose of observing the progression of the disease from the spine into the brain. It is shocking that even Alabama medical societies, including a local chapter of the American Medical Association, supported the continuation of the study as late as 1969. The study was only brought to a halt when a whistleblower informed the press in 1972. Similarities to the...

Sexual Assault Victims Regret Abortion & Seek More Public Hearings (2006)

MOST WOMEN PREGNANT FROM SEXUAL ASSAULT DON'T WANT ABORTIONS, SAY ABORTION INCREASES TRAUMA: SURVEY, BOOK FIND MOST PRESSURED BY OTHERS TO ABORT, NEARLY 80 PERCENT REPORT REGRETS According to a recent poll taken by FoxNews.com, many Americans oppose banning abortion in cases of rape and incest. However, Elliot Institute director Dr. David Reardon says most women who become pregnant through rape or incest do not want abortions. Instead, most report feeling coerced into abortion and that abortion only increased their grief and trauma. Reardon, co-editor of the book Victims and Victors: Speaking Out About Their Pregnancies, Abortions, and Children Resulting from Sexual Assault, says that such exceptions are often seen as compassionate responses to women who would otherwise have no choice but to continue with the pregnancy. "Typically, both sides of the abortion debate have accepted the premise that women who become pregnant as a result of sexual assault want abortions," Reardon said. "It is thought that this will help them put the assault behind them, recover more quickly, and avoid the additional trauma of giving birth to a child conceived in a violent attack. Those who oppose such exceptions are often seen as insensitive and unconcerned about the welfare of women." However, Reardon says, research carried out for Victims and Victors suggests otherwise. In a survey of 192 women who became pregnant through rape or incest, nearly 80 percent said that they regretted their abortions, while none of the women who carried to term said that they wished they had not done so or that they had chosen abortion instead. "Many of the women in the survey also...
