UN Honors Planned Parenthood Abortion Activist Barroso With Population Award

The United Nations awarded longtime Planned Parenthood executive Carmen Barroso for her work promoting “sexual and reproductive health and rights” at a ceremony at UN headquarters last week. The iconic abortion advocate dedicated the award to doctors and health providers who perform illegal abortions and explained how the motivation for her life’s work was personal. Dancing to a Brazilian tune as she received the UN Population Award, Barroso called these doctors “unsung heroes.” The head of the UN Population Fund Babtunde Osotimehin praised Barroso for 40 years of advocacy for “sexual and reproductive health and rights, including the right of adolescents to comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health services.” Barroso said she became pregnant early in her marriage. Life under the Brazil’s military regime was “too much to bear,” she said, adding that she and her husband wanted to put off having a family in order to pursue the “small pleasures of life” as well as “freedom and social justice.” She was “not comfortable with the daily dose” of hormonal contraceptives so she switched to an intra-uterine devise, which led to “copious periods with cramps.” While on the IUD she missed her period. “I froze with horror,” she exclaimed loudly. “The castle of my future came crumbling down,” adding that she was in such a state that she began feeling as if her husband was a “monster inseminator” who had “lost a mischievous sperm” that was now assaulting her “defenseless ovaries.” “There was only one way out,” she concluded. “Interrupt the pregnancy.” Barroso said she found a “very religious” doctor, but one “who saw that I was...

Report Affirms Abortion Is Greatest Genocide in History

Pro-life protesters hold signs imploring onlookers to “Defend Life.” There’s an old saying that if you torture the numbers long enough, they will confess to anything. Recently, the Guttmacher Institute, which has strong ties to Planned Parenthood, published yet another dubious, politically driven report that fudges the numbers on worldwide abortion incidence. Predictably, it is funded by abortion-friendly groups like the Packard Foundation, United Nations Population Fund, World Health Organization, and others. The main problem with the new Guttmacher report is that it does not include actual verifiable data for all countries. If the “government agencies” cited refer to ministries of health and other government offices that collect service reports and data from hospitals and abortion centers, then this data is most likely reliable. However, data compiled from so-called “national representative studies,” whether published or unpublished, are highly suspicious, and this raises important questions. How did these studies obtain their abortion data from the 60 countries where abortion is illegal? Who is reporting those abortions? How is data collected in countries where abortion is under-reported? What about countries that do not have strict reporting requirements and have trouble tracking things such as basic vital statistics, let alone abortion data? It is possible to track 12.4 million actually reported abortions annually worldwide, including in the top three countries of China, the United States, and Russia. But Guttmacher’s assertion that 56.3 million abortions occur worldwide annually is highly improbable and unprovable, not to mention that their total is four and a half times more than the actual documented data available. (Actual abortion data are available here for over 100 nations and...

Attention, Low-Income Women of Oregon: Your Reproduction Is Now the Government’s Business

Who is REALLY in your bedroom? [Comment: At my follow-up exam after the birth of my fourth child, I was asked what kind of birth control I was on by my obstetrician’s partner. I was a bit offended by the bluntness and tone of the question. I answered that I was going back to Natural Family Planning (NFP) which had worked so well in the past. The doctor immediately exclaimed that NFP doesn’t work. When I quoted the statistics and my experience, he then said that NFP was “too hard”. Really?? Now, I was really offended. I told my regular obstetrician about this exchange so that he could educate this young doctor not only about the benefits of NFP but also the risks of artificial contraceptives. I was sadly lacking in that information when I was first married and had to discover it myself when I had problems with the Pill. Reading this article as well as various other medical articles that sing the praises of medical contraceptives while dismissing the real risks and ignoring NFP, I believe this tactic is widespread. All women deserve to know all the risks and options to give truly informed consent. N. Valko RN] Attention, Low-Income Women of Oregon: Your Reproduction Is Now the Government’s Business Oregon’s implementation of its new contraceptive metric is an alarming sign that nationwide governmental monitoring of America’s low-income women’s reproduction is on its way—along with flagrant disregard for women’s privacy and religious freedom. Print Friendly Oregon’s low-income women are about to be subjected to a level of invasive questioning and religious disrespect by government-funded health-care providers on...

No Need for Population Control

Contrary to the fear mongering of the population alarmists, the world is not heading for a demographic catastrophe. The latest data on world population from the U.N. Population Division reveals a number of trends that seem to indicate otherwise. The following is PRI’s brief overview of some of the findings from the recently released 2015 Revision of the World Population Prospects. According to the U.N. Population Division, world population is estimated to be 7.3 billion today. That number is expected to rise to 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. In the past two and a half decades, world population has increased by 2 billion people. Yet despite the rapid rise in world population, the percentage of people living with hunger in developing countries has actually dropped from 24% to 14% over the same time period. Welcoming another 4 billion to the human family does not appear to necessitate a demographic catastrophe. Child Mortality Info Graphic In fact, the future appears to be quite bright for future generations, especially in poorer and less developed nations. Infant and childhood mortality are set to decline sharply worldwide. By 2100, the rate of deaths among children under the age of five will fall as much as 82% in less developed nations and 80% in the world’s least developed countries. Life Expectancy Worldwide info graphic Future generations will also have significantly longer lifespans to look forward to. World average life expectancy at birth in the early 1950’s was 48 years for women and 45 for men. Today those numbers are 73 for women and 68 for men. By 2100, life expectancy...

Population Controllers Predicted Overpopulation Would Destroy the World, They Were Wrong

In a 1971 appearance on the Dick Cavett Show, John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono gave their take on the big scare of the day: overpopulation. “I don’t really believe it,” Lennon said in his Beatle-esque Liverpool accent. “I think whatever happens will balance itself out…It’s alright for us all living to say, ‘Well, there’s enough of us [people] so we won’t have any more…I don’t believe in that.” It was a counter-cultural statement—even for the voice of the counterculture. Back then, all of the experts were warning that our planet couldn’t take much more. And no one sounded that alarm more loudly than Dr. Paul Ehrlich, the Stanford biologist behind the explosive bestseller, “The Population Bomb.” “The battle to feed all of humanity is over,” Ehrlich announced on the opening page of his book, forecasting “an utter breakdown in the capacity of the planet to support humanity,” resulting in starvation for hundreds of millions. Half of Americans would die by the end of the eighties, he said; India and China would self-destruct, and by the year 2000, England wouldn’t exist. “Sometime in the next 15 years,” Ehrlich confidently predicted the year before Lennon’s Dick Cavett appearance, “the end will come.” Well it’s forty-five years later, and we have twice the number of people Ehrlich said would exceed the earth’s carrying capacity. The end has not come, and England mysteriously still exists. In a surprising and honest move, the New York Times ran a piece this month debunking the horrors of overpopulation. A video attached with the article features Stewart Brand, a former disciple of Ehrlich’s who’s now a...

Vietnam Poised to End Two-Child Policy (2015)

PRI celebrates human rights victory Vietnamese outlet Thanh Nien News reports that the Vietnamese government is preparing to categorically reverse its two-child policy. If this happens, Vietnamese families will be able to decide for themselves how many children they can have, without government fines or punishment. For decades, the Vietnamese government sterilized women after the birth of their second child, and employed coercive economic restrictions to punish families who had more than 2 children. In the September/October 1995 PRI Review, we noted: “[Vietnam] denies third children a birth certificate and offers a reward of $20 [in 1995 US dollars] to women who have a hysterectomy. Punishment for having a third child exists across Vietnam, but it appears the policy, which began in 1985, is most strict among the subsistence farmers who make up the poorer echelons of society. Families who violate the policy are denied land to grow rice—and thus effectively starved—until they fall back into line. They are also fined about $80 [in 1995 US dollars], a seemingly paltry amount that is in fact the equivalent of 10 months’ income. The government encourages women to undergo a hysterectomy following the birth of her second child, a procedure to which approximately half of all village women have been subjected.” Several years later we returned to Vietnam, and our on-the-ground investigation once again confirmed that: “Vietnam’s family planning policy is universally coercive, and includes a two-child limit for cadres, manual workers, civil servants, soldiers, families living in a municipality or in the Red River or Mekong Deltas; and birth limitations for ethnic families in northern mountain provinces, Central Highlands and...

Ethiopians Protest in Israel: Israel Tried to Reduce Ethiopian Birth Rate (2015)

Ethiopian-Israelis took to the streets in Tel-Aviv earlier this month to protest discriminatory treatment. Although the protests were sparked by a video of policemen beating a black Israeli soldier, racial tension has been building for years. In 2013, the Israeli government admitted it had injected Ethiopian women with Depo-Provera, a long acting contraceptive, without the women’s consent in order to reduce the Ethiopian birth rate. Some Ethiopian women were injected in immigration camps and were told that unless they accepted the injection, they would be denied entry into Israel. Health workers falsely told other women that the Depo-Provera shots were inoculations. [29 May 2015, Anne Roback Morse, pop.org, Population Research...

The New York Times Throws in the Towel on ‘Overpopulation’ (Commentary, 2015)

A top-of-the-website New York Times article has discredited the population alarmism of the past fifty years. In “The Unrealized Horrors of Population Explosion” [ http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/01/us/the-unrealized-horrors-of-population-explosion.html?_r=2 ] the newspaper has … thrown population control on the ash heap of discredited ideas. The article included a video interview with Paul Ehrlich, the author of The Population Bomb. He was the butterfly scientist from Stanford who scared tens of millions with the specter of overpopulation—and the population apocalypse that would supposedly result. Ehrlich predicted that by the 1970’s the “population bomb” would explode—and hundreds of millions of people would starve to death in India and elsewhere. (India is still there, and doing quite well, thank you.) But America’s “newspaper of record,” as it styles itself, failed to record the horrors themselves. It was woefully incomplete. There was no mention of the human costs when governments made population control a priority. No mention of the savage forced abortions and forced sterilizations that followed. No mention of the killing of baby girls through female infanticide and sex-selective abortion. No mention of the wasted money, the age and gender imbalances that continue to unfold and will take effect for years to come. No mention of how the overpopulation panic helped to fuel the rise of birth control use and abortion. Instead, when citing reasons why birth rates have dropped world-wide, the article offered more benign explanations. First, improved health standards mean that couples no longer need to have 5 children in the hope that 3 survive. Second, large families are not necessary in post-agricultural society since they are not needed to work the land, and...

Burmese Population Control Bill Signed Into Law: Thousands Flee in Boats (2015)

On May 19th, Myanmar’s president, Thein Sein, signed the “Population Control and Healthcare Law.” This law is part of a package of four bills labeled “race and religion protection bills.” The Population Control Law is written in language that mandates birth spacing and allows local governments to oversee population control initiatives. The law offers no protection against coercion, force, or discrimination. The law is widely considered a means of targeting the Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority in Burma that has been the sole targeted victim of Burma’s two-child policy. The recent Population Control Bill has been condemned by numerous human rights organizations, as well as by the U.S. State Department. In the past several weeks, as the proposed law worked its way through Burma’s legislative system, tens of thousands fled across the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea in overcrowded boats. Hundreds of men, women, and children die from the conditions on the boats or under abuse from the traffickers guiding them out of Burma. 2 Doctors, 103 Women, 1 Day = Sterilization Quota Achieved in India

The end of the financial year has arrived in India, as it has in a number of other countries, but there the pressure of the bottom line has produced a very shocking effect. Early last month two doctors working at a hospital in the Malda district of West Bengal, performed sterilization surgery on 103 women in one day. Since the hospital could only accommodate 30 women the rest were carried out on rough stretchers and dumped on an open field to recover. Some were loaded onto rickshaws, still bleeding and in semi-conscious or unconscious states, to be sent home. One woman fell off a rickshaw on her way home and had to be hospitalized with severe injuries. This barbarous scene, captured on video by activists and aired on Indian news channel NDTV, may seem like a throwback to the 1970s when Indira Gandhi’s war on population was in full swing – something local and anomalous in 2013 – but it is not. Indian human rights activists say that mass sterilization camps occur across the country, especially in the poorest states, driven by female sterilization targets set by state governments in the spirit of the central government’s population plan. “The camps are happening non-stop right now throughout the country because the end of the financial year – March 31 – is approaching and there is pressure on health workers to meet their sterilisation quotas,” said an American lawyer with the Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) in Delhi in the Population Research Institute’s journal last month. “We’ll have a constant stream of injured and dying women as a result.” The PRI...

Chinese Women Face Infertility Issues Brought on by Abortion, One-Child Policy

Semi-official data indicate that 40 million couples, one in eight, have difficulties in having children and fertility treatment often fails. The problems of infertility are blamed on the high abortion rates in China exacerbated by the forced-abortion one-child family planning policy. The data, according to AsiaNews, puts the infertility rate at 12.5 percent for all couples in childbearing age. As a result of China’s one-child policy the most populous country in the world could soon experience expanded labor shortages and a rapidly aging population. The 2009 Investigative Report on the Current State of Infertility in China, which was released at the China International Summit Forum on Infertility in August, found, in a survey of 18,000 people, seeking treatment for infertility in Beijing, that 10 percent had been trying to conceive for a year since getting married, 15 percent had been trying for two years and 25 percent for 10 years. For women, the leading cause of infertility is the blockage of the fallopian tubes, mostly induced by abortions. In all, 66 percent said their infertility had not been cured after repeated treatments. Since the late 1970s, China has pursued a one-child policy, whereby couples are prevented from having a second child, except for rural couples when their first-born is female or members of ethnic minorities, and punished with heavy fines in case of violations. Now medical experts conclude that abortion can cause complications for women who want to have children. The best fertility clinics in China, like the Reproductive and Genetic Hospital of Citic-Xiangya in Changsha, see long queues of desperate couples. The situation is such that the hospital’s...

Shipment of Condoms Apparently Better Than Aid Relief for Myanmar (Burma)

While relief agencies struggled to secure permission to bring food, medicine, and shelter to the 2.4 million cyclone victims in Myanmar, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was allowed to deliver a shipment of thousands of condoms to the region. More than 133,000 people are dead or missing in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, which struck Myanmar on May 2. The junta ruling Myanmar has resisted accepting foreign disaster aid, granting foreign helicopters permission to distribute aid only on Wednesday. The UNFPA is shipping to Myanmar reproductive health kits which include razors for cutting umbilical cords, clean sheets for delivering babies, and contraceptive pills and shots to last 3,390 women for three months, the Independent Online reports. A shipment designed to serve 200,000 to 300,000 people arrived in Yangon by commercial cargo flight on May 10, according to the UNFPA web site. The UNFPA says it has shipped more than 70,000 condoms to survivors. “We don’t want regular use of contraception disrupted. An emergency usually damages the health system, so people don’t have access to condoms and contraceptives,” said UNFPA aid advisor Chaiyos Kunanusont. According to the Independent Online, Chaiyos said a total of 218,400 condoms will be delivered. Aid groups have complained that limits imposed by Myanmar’s ruling government are hindering the provision of vital supplies to survivors. [Bangkok, May 22, 2008 / 05:58 pm (CNA);...

Babies for Sale: The Scandal of China’s Single Child Policy

Babies for sale: The scandal of China’s brutal single child policy Lying on a spartan bed, feeding her tiny daughter from a bottle, teenager Wai Ling describes her heartbreaking dilemma. Under China’s strict birth-control laws, Wai Ling, 19, and her boyfriend, 21, are too young to get married – and without being married they can’t register their daughter’s birth. They could bribe a state official to turn a blind eye, but that would cost far more than they could ever afford – half a year’s salary of £1,300. Sickening trade: A boy like this is worth £1,200 to China’s child snatchers The alternative of a court appearance and swingeing fine for having an illegal child would be equally ruinous – so Wai Ling feels she has little choice but to sell her newborn baby to a child trafficker. Even the thought of handing over her baby causes her unbearable pain. “Every mother assumes she will be with her child for ever,” she cries plaintively. “But soon she will be growing up in another family. As a mother, I really want to watch her grow every day with me. But I know that’s not possible.” Twelve years ago, Kate Blewitt and Brian Wood’s award-winning documentary The Dying Rooms caused international outrage with its shocking footage of malnourished Chinese babies being left to die of starvation in state-run orphanages. Now the film-makers have returned to China to find out what effect the country’s capitalist explosion is having on Beijing’s brutal and unbending Single Child Policy. Wai Ling’s harrowing story is revealed in their special Dispatches programme, China’s Stolen Babies, which reveals...

Ted Turner’s UN Foundation Has Given $1 Billion to UN Population Control Projects

Major focus of foundation is population control, condoms, abortion. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan gushed with praise for Ted Turner’s philanthropy to the UN at an annual UN Association-USA dinner [Reuter’s News]. Media mogul Turner [founder, CNN] personally committed to donate $1 billion to the United Nations Foundation (UNF) in 1998. The foundation is a public charity created by Turner to channel his contributions towards population control, condom distribution and abortion issues that are important to him. Reuters reported the foundation has also raised millions from other corporations, governments and charities. The foundation’s web site states that “The United Nations Foundation’s Women and Population Program supports United Nations (UN) efforts to increase socio-economic opportunities for adolescent girls and women while increasing access to and improving the quality of reproductive health and family planning services.” The UNF sees a lack of condoms, so-called unsafe abortions, and alleged over-population as major issues of concern. A 2001 LifeSiteNews.com report verified that the vast majority of grants from Turner to the UN were used in the area of population reduction. A United Nations report said that in 2000 “$74 million were allocated to the work of the United Nations from the $1 billion pledged by Ted Turner in 1998, with a majority ($42 million) of the grants going to projects dealing with women and population issues.” The data was found in a report by Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the UN Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP), the body established to liaise with the UN Foundation. The board of directors of Turner’s UNF includes well known population control advocates such as the former head of United...

William Buffett Donation to Bill Gates Foundation Means Millions More $ for Abortion

Investment guru Warren Buffett says he will donate the bulk of his fortune to the pro-abortion foundation set up by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife. That the world’s second richest man would leave about 80 percent of his estate to the Gates’ foundation is a huge concern for pro-life advocates because of the groups it supports. Buffet is the 75 year-old chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and he told Fortune magazine he will begin making contributions to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation next month by giving it stock options in the company. According to an Associated Press report, Buffet will give the Gates foundation 12,050,000 in Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway. One share of the stock sells for just over $3,000, and would give the Gates foundation another $37 billion. It already has $29 billion, which makes it the world’s largest charity. “Gates and Buffett are birds of a feather, having both been long time supporters of population control, giving large sums of money to groups that advocate abortion, contraception and sterilization, usually in the name of stopping AIDS or poverty.” [26June, LifeSiteNews.com]   The donation causes huge concerns for pro-life advocates as the Gates Foundation has given the Planned Parenthood Federation of America abortion business almost $12.5 million since 1998, including funds to persuade teenagers to support abortion and to lobby the United Nations to advance pro-abortion proposals. The Gates foundation has also given nearly $21 million to the International Planned Parenthood abortion business over the last seven years. The funds have gone to promote abortions in third-world nations and to set up...

Population Control While People Die

As “family planning” devours aid budgets, an old killer stalks the poor… Every year the United States spends hundreds of millions of dollars to control the fertility of the developing world’s people. Every year at least 2.7 million of those people1 – or about one every 12 seconds2 – (of whom an estimated one-third are under the age of five) dies of malaria, a disease whose origins, methods of treatment and courses of prevention mankind has known or studied for 100 years. That these two facts co-exist represents one of the greatest scandals in American foreign policy during this century and threatens to poison US relations with many nations in the developing world well into the next. What is malaria? Malaria is among the best known of human parasitic diseases. Its infective cycle begins when a female mosquito belonging to the genus Anopheles bites someone already carrying one of four species of protozoan parasites belonging to the Plasmodium family. Along with the blood she ingests come tiny malarial cells called gametocytes. These migrate to the mosquito’s mid gut where, over a period of about 12 days, they sexually produce sporozoites, which are the cells responsible for infecting humans and which migrate to the mosquito’s salivary glands. When the malarial infected mosquito bites a new host large numbers of the sporozoites mingle with her saliva and enter the person’s bloodstream, where they move quickly to infect liver cells. There, over about 10 days, they reproduce and mature into cells called merozoites. These, in turn, reenter the bloodstream, where they infect and kill red blood cells by appropriating the host cell’s...

Eugenics, an American Dynasty, and Roe v. Wade

by Rebecca R. Messall, Esq. This article is taken from its fuller version in the fall 2004 issue of Human Life Review, available in its entirety at www.humanlifereview.com. Everyone knows that the infamous Roe v. Wade opinion legalized abortion, but almost no one knows that legal abortion was a strategy by eugenicists, as early as 1939, to “genetically improve” the population by “reducing it”. In writing his opinion, Roe‘s author, Justice Harry A. Blackmun, relied directly and indirectly on the work of these British and American eugenicists. Eugenics is easiest to describe as being the Darwin-based theory behind the Nazis’ plans to “breed” a race of human thoroughbreds. After Hitler, eugenic theorists advocated global control over who has babies, and how many. It has been called “population thinking”. America’s richest families promoted eugenicists and their many social initiatives, including Roe. One of the clearest links between the eugenics movement and U.S. abortion policy is visible in the American Eugenics Society’s (AES) 1956 membership records, which includes a Planned Parenthood co-founder, Margaret Sanger, and at least 2 presidents, William Vogt and Alan Guttmacher. The AES had an ugly history of multiple ties to prominent Nazis in Germany. AES members assisted Hitler in crafting the 1933 German sterilization laws. Unbelievably, in 1956 — after WWII — the AES membership list included Dr. Otmar Frieherr Von Verschuer, who had supervised the ongoing “science” experiments of Dr. Josef Mengele at Auschwitz. The AES lobbied successfully for involuntary sterilization laws in the USA, which claimed an estimated 63,000 victims. In 1927, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld those laws in Buck v. Bell, which was...

Inherent Racism of Population Control

“MUST READ” REPORT ON POPULATION CONTROL — Document reveals the why of attacks against life & family over past decades: The Inherent Racism Of Population Control link: http://www.lifesite.net/waronfamily/Population_Control/Inherentracism.pdf  This 58-page document is a MUST READ for all persons concerned about life, family and even freedom. For the vast majority, it provides the all-important “big picture”. Without this understanding, most will continue to fight against shadows, ignore real culprits and perhaps be too harsh towards opponents who do not realize they are being used. How could all the negative social changes of recent decades have happened so fast? Why are they being allowed to happen? Why are our governments, courts, educational institutions, the media and even the United Nations so powerfully behind destructive policies against life, family, traditional religion and even certain freedoms? In the late 1960’s and early 70’s abortion began to proliferate in western nations. It was accompanied by an explosion of divorce, contraceptive use, so-called 'sexual liberation' and a continuing decline of general morality, family life and respect for human life. The result has been a massive drop in birthrates worldwide and the now looming economic and social consequences of a demographic crash.   Soon after abortion was legalized in North America those who became involved in the pro-life struggle did not yet realize who and what they were they were actually fighting. They had no idea then, and sadly, most social conservatives still don’t, that abortion was only one part of much wider, international agendas supported by various organizations and individuals with some common interests and ambitions.  Planned Parenthood has been the most influential of all...
