Quotes to Note

Every 38 seconds a woman lays her body down for an abortion, sacrificing her child because she lacks practical resources and emotional support. About two-thirds of women who have abortions feel pressured to do so. They rarely have the critical information that abortion can dramatically increase their risk of breast cancer.

Even 1 abortion can increase a woman's chance of breast cancer by 90%. Teens who have an abortion in their second trimester, have a history of breast cancer in their family, and do not have children later have an 800% higher risk of breast cancer.

Women have the Right to Know about the LINK between abortion and breast cancer. Women deserve full medical disclosure. Women can handle it. Women deserve better... than abortion.

["Abortion-Breast Cancer Link," Angela Lanfranchi, M.D. and Joel Brind, Ph.D.; Feminists for Life of America, 9/04]

WHY ELSE IS ABSTINENCE IMPORTANT?

Try Some Financial Reasons:

-- Abstinence is a $17 billion commitment to good health.

--A successful abstainer does not cost even $1 of the annual $12 billion AIDS health tax bill.

--A successful abstainer does not cost even $1 of the $4 billion annual tax abortion expense.

--A successful abstainer does not cost even $1 of the $1 billion annual unwanted pregnancy tax dollar outlay.

-- What a generous financial contribution successful abstainers make to the local, state and federal tax rolls. This contribution is worth recognition by every taxpayer.

-- Abstinence may not be everything, but it has financial, moral AND health advantages that stand alone. [Mobile Register, 03/03/02, 21Feb02]

Dr. Penny Hitchcock, head of the STD branch at the National Inst of Health (NIH) say that a sexually active person’s chance of getting an STD by age 24 is 1 in 3.

"These kids are not promiscuous; they’re practicing serial monogamy.

"A partner a year, let’s say. If you start having sex at 15, by the time you are 24, in terms of partners, you’ve been exposed to over 500 people", notes Hitchcock. (The sex partners of all your sex partners.) [ABC News, 7Sep99; Abstinence Network, Winter 99]

What IF There Really Were A PERFECT CONDOM?

* It still wouldn’t protect at all against HPV – warts and cancer * It still wouldn’t protect people emotionally * It still wouldn’t protect the broken heart * It still wouldn’t build healthy relationships  * It still wouldn’t cut down on multiple sex partners * It still wouldn’t make sex more enjoyable

[adapted from Abstinence Network, Winter 99]

Why Save Sex for Marriage?

* Waiting will make your dating relationships better. You’ll spend more time getting to know each other. * Waiting will help you find the right mate (someone who values you for the person you are!) * Waiting will increase your self-respect. * Waiting will gain the respect of others. * Waiting teaches you to respect others; you’ll never pressure anyone. * Waiting takes the pressure off you. * Waiting means a clear conscience (no guilt) and peace of mind (no conflicts, no regrets!) * Waiting means a better sexual relationship in marriage. By waiting, you’re being faithful to your spouse even before you meet him/her!

[Kristine Napier, The Power of Abstinence, 1996]

Dr. Janet Smith, writer and philosophy professor at the University of Dallas, adds another reason for saving sex for marriage:

* By practicing the virtues involved in waiting – such as faithfulness, self-control, modesty, good judgment, courage, and genuine respect for self and others – you’re developing the kind of character that will make you a good marriage partner and attract the kind of person you’d like to marry.
