Quotes to Note

Over 50 MILLION abortions have taken place in the US since 1973. That means that every single minute, 2-3 babies are aborted in the USA.

It’s time to stand up together, make a difference, and End Abortion by 2020!

Make the pledge: Our tax money is used to fund abortion. We will work to stop this funding!

   1. Pledge to Wear Black on Fridays. Join others and pledge to wear black on Fridays to mourn the lives lost to abortion. This is a very simple way for you to get involved immediately and show others what you believe.

   2. Educate. Begin a dialogue with friends and tell them what you believe and why. Use the resources on this site to help educate them --  www.abortionblackout.com

Discuss with your children and teens the truth of what abortion is and how to prevent falling into situations where they would be confronted with having to make those tough choices, and what to do if someone they know is considering having an abortion.
Explain to your children -- to all the teens you know -- that Sexual Abstinence STOPS Abortion!

   3. Donate $1 a week to make a difference. This is an easy way to make a direct impact in the life of a pregnant mother and her unborn child. Giving just one dollar for every Friday you wear black, will help... support Pregnancy Resource Centers across the United States.

These centers give women Real Choices that do not include abortion. They help pregnant women in life-affirming ways, by giving them free sonograms, providing them with diapers, formula and cribs, etc. They also help women through the adoption process if they choose, and provide housing if their families have abandoned them.

Find a pregnancy center in your area -- www.pregnancycenters.org -- and send them a donation as often as you can...

Why not VOLUNTEER at your local pregnancy center to answer the phone, do janitorial tasks, make repairs or remodel, organize baby supplies, teach, counsel, fund raise, or any number of other activities?

If not you, WHO?
If not now, WHEN?

Sign the pledge, Get involved, Spread the word...End-Abortion by 2020...

Severe Caudal Regression Syndome: A Personal Story PDF Print E-mail

This is a personal story. I want to share it with you, because it puts our Sanctity of Human Life ethic in perspective. It certainly sharpened my perspective!

It concerns Elly, a girl I delivered in 1993. I had not seen her for 16 years, as they had moved away. I received a graduation picture and a note from her mom in June.

In this age of AFP testing, targeted ultrasound, (both of which can be very helpful) and "wrongful birth" litigation and "search and destroy mentality" (both of which are anti-Life), Elly would be recommended for intrauterine destruction by many in our discipline. But go back to 1993: She was her mom's first pregnancy. Prenatal course uneventful. Labor at term complicated by a bad FHT pattern and meconium. Emergency CS was done. I was stunned to deliver a beautiful girl baby with basically no legs. Severe caudal regression syndome. Totally unexpected. Good Apgar. What do you say to the mother and dad? (Maybe you have faced a situation like this.) I just prayed "Oh, Lord, give me the right thing to say, and help me not to say something stupid to these parents who are in shock!"

I'll let Elly's mom continue the story in the note I received in June 2010 with her high school graduation announcement:

"Dear Dr. ------,

When I delivered my daughter back in l993, she was born with a neural tube defect (caudal regression syndrome), and you were very supportive and helpful for my husband Ed and I. Things were not too certain for her when she was born, but I thought I would give you a great update.

Elly has just graduated from high school (at 17, a year early), and she graduated in the top 8% of her class of 650. She will be going on to study Biology in the pre-vet program down at [a southern university]. She will also be playing on the wheelchair basketball team. Currently [this university's team is the reigning National Championship team for both 2009 and 2010. She is hoping to attend Vet school at [another well-known university], and possibly play on the paralympic wheelchair basketball team in the future.

You told us when she was born that she was a gift from God, and that things would work out. Little did we know that night at the hospital how true all that was. I just wanted to let you know all about Elly, and to thank you for all your support and care. I have enclosed a picture so you can see how beautiful she turned out, but more importantly she is beautiful on the inside where it counts.

Thank you again for everything you did for us back on March 11, l993, and may God continue to bless you and use you to forward His kingdom. Thank you."

I was blown away. Birth defects happen, since Creation is flawed. But God is up to the task of "making beauty from ashes." Elly is that beauty.

3 weeks later, the family came here to visit grandfolks. I got to spend 2 hours face to face with Elly. Here is a lovely 17 year old girl who is poised, confident, and looked me straight in the eye as we talked...

It was a deeply moving experience, as well as a delightful experience. As I drove home, I could only think of the story in John's Gospel of the man born blind. "Who sinned," they asked, "this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" "Neither," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life." Elly displays the work of God in her life.

I encourage you not to buy our culture's (including our medical culture's) demeaning view that if the baby is not "perfect," it will be a burden, and the mother should consider aborting it, killing it before birth. God has much better plans. "His power is made perfect in weakness."
