There were 43,158 new cases of HIV reported in 2001 in the U.S. The number of cases is rising. In 2000, there were 40,000 new cases. Exactly 50% (half) of all these new cases of HIV in 2000 were among 15-24 year-olds. New strains of HIV are appearing, and the medications presently being used are not as effective over time. |
