ABORTION PILL RU-486 ON “ESSENTIAL DRUG” LIST OF WHO – The British Medical Journal reported 9July that the World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the RU-486 chemical abortifacient as an “essential” medicine for inclusion in a list of medicines required to be available to physicians working in developing countries. Arguing that the combination of mifepristone followed later by misoprostol is a safe alternative to surgical abortion in countries where abortion is often illegal, the WHO authorized inclusion of the drug as essential to combat what it terms back-alley “unsafe abortions.” [WHO dir, medicines policy/standards & secretary of its essential medicines committee] Hans Hogerzeil criticized the USA’s opposition to the inclusion of RU-486 as an “essential” medicine. The USA did achieve one goal – the inclusion of a phrase in the essential drug list that reads, “Where permitted under national law and where culturally acceptable.” The UK’s Society for the Protection of Unborn Children said it “hoped enough cultures rejected the drugs … as they would bring innocent life to an end,” as reported by the BMJ. After news of the RU-486 inclusion by WHO, Planned Parenthood wrote to congratulate its members, saying, “More than 5,000 FreeChoiceSavesLives.org activists like you took action to protect these women by emailing Dr. Lee Jong-Wook at the [WHO]… Your emails urging him not to cave in to the inappropriate, ideologically-driven pressure it was receiving from the [US HHS] seem to have given the WHO the encouragement it needed to stop dragging its feet.” Concerned Women for America (CWA) posted on its Web site in 1/05 public documents revealing ~600 serious complications suffered by women who used the abortion drug RU-486 in the US. UN MEMBER SAYS ABORTION IS BAD FOR WOMEN;
Calls Choice an "Illusion" at UN Committee Meeting on Women's Rights

A member of a United Nations committee that is known for advocating abortion has said that abortion is "bad for women" and that she hopes that one day it will be seen in the same way that people now regard torture.

The comments came from a member of the UN committee that oversees compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination of Women (CEDAW).

Krisztina Morvai of Hungary was quoted as saying during a committee session, "One thing that is invisible and lost in the debate is that abortion is bad for women. . . . No woman actually wants to have an abortion. We have this illusion that women have free choices. But abortion is a terribly damaging thing psychologically, spiritually and physically."

Morvai also reportedly stated in an earlier session that the majority of women undergo abortions because their partners don't support the pregnancy and called for more emphasis to be placed on "the responsibility of men." She is one of 23 committee members who are elected from among the 180 countries that support CEDAW. [19July05, Elliot Institute]

ILLINOIS COURT CLEARS WAY FOR LAWSUIT OVER 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL'S ABORTION DEATH - An Illinois woman whose 13-year-old daughter died from a botched abortion can sue the abortion business, an appeals court has ruled.

Deanna Bell died in the recovery room of a Chicago abortion facility after suffering cardiac arrest during an abortion in 1992. According to a wrongful death suit initially filed by her mother, Diane Adams, Bell was given an overdose of anesthesia, which resulted in respiratory problems that eventually led to her death. The lawsuit also states that there were no trained medical staff overseeing Bell in the recovery room and that staff members failed to call 911 when she developed breathing problems.

The current appeals court ruling is the latest in a round of rules and appeals stretching back to 1999, when a jury ruled in favor of the abortion facility. A higher court threw out the jury's decision in 2000, but when Adams tried to refile the lawsuit last year, another judge ruled that too much time had elapsed. The appeals court has reinstated the case and will allow Adams to go ahead with her lawsuit. [1July05, Elliot Institute]
