Senators Reject UN Disability Treaty

The Senate voted down a United Nations (UN) treaty Tuesday that would have compromised parental rights regarding how best to care for children with disabilities.

President Obama signed the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2009, and sent it to the Senate in May. The Senate voted 61-38 Tuesday, falling short of the 66 votes needed for ratification.

Despite the treaty’s nice-sounding name, it was never really focused on the protection of people with disabilities in the United States, said Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) Director of Federal Relations Will Estrada.
[4 Dec 12, Bethany Monk, CitizenLink.com]

December 5, 2012

Yesterday the Senate, by a vote of 61-38, failed to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which would have done nothing to help persons with disabilities, but would have diminished U.S. sovereignty by giving the United Nations unprecedented authority over American businesses.

Treaties require 2/3 of the Senators present to vote for ratification.  Since 99 Senators were present for the vote, the treaty needed 66 yes votes but received only 61.

If your Senator is one of the 38 who voted against the Treaty, please take a moment to call and thank him or her.

This Treaty is likely to come to the Senate floor again in the future, so please urge your Senator to stand strong and continue to oppose it!

Video: Sign the New Emancipation Proclamation for the Preborn Child

As movie-goers flock to see Lincoln, a pro-life ministry hopes to use his precedent to set unborn children free.

Priests for Life, States of Refuge, and other pro-life ministries are asking Americans to sign the Emancipation Proclamation for the Preborn Child – http://www.prebornemancipation.org/

“The second Emancipation Proclamation is not to end slavery but to end child-killing,” Pastor Rusty Thomas, Assistant Director of Operation Save America, told LifeSiteNews.com.

The document declares “that all children, from conception forward, are human beings. They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Thomas said, “We’re going to put all those signatures on a scroll on January 1, 2013” – the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s signing the Emancipation Proclamation.

In the month of January – which also marks the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision – organizers will unfurl the signatures down the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

“We have to remember that, because we violated liberty, it cost our nation a great Civil War where 650,000 people died to atone for that violation,” Thomas told LifeSiteNews. “God only knows what will happen to our future when God calls us to account for shedding the innocent blood of more than 54 million children made in His image.”

Thomas said he hoped the new declaration would become a turning point in America’s debate over abortion, as other citizen-initiated documents have been in the past.

“During these moments of our history, there were these documents that came along that brave men and women signed,” which “changed the course of our history.”

The preborn “need to be welcomed in life and protected in law,” he said.

Ten Reasons the Pro-Life Movement is Winning on Abortion

We are closer to achieving our goal of winning the fight to end abortion and restoring protection to children in the womb than the mainstream media is reporting.

To help you see the truth of that statement and to inspire you to renew your commitment to the fight, here are ten signs that point to the fact that the end of abortion in America will come sooner than you may think. Of this much I am certain, we will not have to wait for the next generation to plan and carry out victory celebrations. That will be our task…

Pro-Life Victories Piled Up in 2012 Despite Election Loss

In a featured op-ed piece in the Washington Times AUL Vice President of Government Affairs Dan McConchie observed that despite the November election results, the outlook for pro-life victories is bright. His analysis should give abortion advocates a lot to be concerned about in the New Year.

Activist Admits Texas Ultrasound Saving Babies From Abortion

[O]ne abortion advocate has recently admitted that the Sonogram Law is, indeed, having an impact for Life. Amy Hagstrom Miller, CEO of Whole Woman’s Health — one of Texas’ largest abortion chains — told the Texas Tribune last week that abortions at her five centers have declined since the law took effect in October 2011.

Ultrasound. The Sonogram Law stipulates that abortionists must make sonogram images available to women 24 hours ahead of their scheduled abortions, and make the unborn baby’s heartbeat, if one is detected, audible for the women to hear.

Pro-Lifers have known for a long time what happens when women see and hear their unborn babies. Christine Melchor, head of Houston Coalition for Life, told Texas Right to Life that 90 percent of the women who come to her mobile sonogram clinic choose to carry their pregnancies to term after viewing a sonogram. Pro-Life clinics nationwide report similar results.

Elizabeth Graham, Director of Texas Right to Life, is not surprised by Hagstrom Miller’s admission. “Looking through the window to the womb, women recognize the child growing within them is not an inconsequential blob of tissue. When equipped with facts and information about both pregnancy and abortion, women are empowered to choose Life over abortion. If abortion centers are seeing a decrease in their business, that means women are turning to legitimate health care agencies for services,” said Graham.

Melchor parks her mobile pregnancy center outside the gates of Planned Parenthood in Houston every day. She reported to Texas Right to Life in September that she has seen fewer cars parked in the parking lot, and fewer women walking into Planned Parenthood since the Sonogram Law took effect. And while Planned Parenthood’s numbers are dropping, her own clientele has skyrocketed with women seeking free pre-abortion sonograms.

That Christine has noticed this trend at Planned Parenthood’s “Prevention Park,” the largest abortion facility in the Western Hemisphere, is a strong testament to the power of the sonogram.

Texas Right to Life made passing the strongest Sonogram Law a top priority in 2011, precisely because we knew that when women are presented with objective truth and are treated with a high standard of medical care, most will choose Life.

Feminists for Life Names Remarkable Pro-Life Women® Who Made Exceptional Choices When Facing "Hard Cases"

Feminists for Life's 2012 special issue of The American Feminist focuses on "Hard Cases, Exceptional Choices."  FFL President Serrin M. Foster answers the most controversial and important questions of our day: "What about rape (including statutory rape and incest), disability, and life of the mother?" Following the pro-woman answers to pro-choice questions in each section are firsthand accounts by a dozen women that Feminists for Life is recognizing as "Remarkable Pro-Life Women.®"

"These Remarkable Pro-Life Women® faced life's toughest questions without resorting to violence-even those who were victims of a violent act. Those who faced the worst news about their unborn children gave them every chance at life. And those who were born despite the odds passed their gift forward. Each of these women is remarkable in her own way." says Foster.

Analyn Megison, Heather Gemmen Wilson, and Joyce McCauley-Benner each embraced nonviolence for themselves and their unborn children after they were raped and soon learned they were pregnant.

Rebecca Kiessling and Juda Myers, both conceived as a result of rape, assert the inherent value of every life.

Julia Schoch details her gratitude for her daughter's birthmother, an uncommonly brave 13-year-old rape survivor.

Kristi Hofferber learned she was the only survivor of six children conceived in incest, and mourns her missing siblings.

Angelica Talavera thanks her mother for daring to go against medical advice to continue her pregnancy-and passed it forward by founding a pregnancy resource center for the most vulnerable in her community.

Jeannie French refused to follow her physician's pressure to abort after learning her daughter would be born without most of her brain and skull. Mary lived for only a few hours but saved the lives of two other children.

Diane Simoni and Tracy Haugen believed that their children given terminal diagnoses before birth were still human beings worthy of life, regardless of its brevity.

Lourdes Hnath proudly affirms that her life is better because of her son who was born with Down syndrome.

Two other stories are shared anonymously, including a woman who recalls her visit to Planned Parenthood for an abortion after being molested by her brother and an older friend.

The 36-page issue includes thought-provoking ads in English and Spanish, about children with special needs, and of a woman conceived in rape.

Editor Jewels Green, who had an abortion and worked in an abortion clinic before becoming pro-life says, "I am deeply moved by the heartbreaking, courageous, life-affirming stories shared by these brave women. They inspire me to even stronger dedication to creating a world where resources are available to pregnant mothers, all life is respected regardless of the circumstances surrounding conception, and abortion is unthinkable."

AUL’s Yoest Ce

lebrates Historic Drop in Abortion,  Notes that Cutting-Edge Legislation Advances Life

WASHINGTON, D.C. (11/23/2012) – Americans United for Life President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest called the news of a historic 5% drop in the abortion rate, released by the Centers for Disease Control on the eve of Thanksgiving, “a real cause for giving thanks.”  Nevertheless, the pro-life leader noted that reporting on the new data has not included a more somber data-point:  the number of abortion-related maternal fatalities doubled in 2008, the most recent year data is available.
“The CDC report documents the death of twelve women following their abortion,” said Dr. Yoest. “That number is double the deaths reported the previous year and it’s the highest since 1994.”

“For more than 40 years, AUL has been working to advance a culture of life that protects women and children from Big Abortion. And today we celebrate this historic drop in the abortion rate.  At the same time, we have to ask why the abortion-related deaths of 12 women are buried in the very last table of the report and unremarked on in the news. The news from this report is that abortion harms women, as well as their babies.”

The CDC themselves note in their analysis that state laws have contributed to the decline in the number and rate of abortion. As the legal arm of the pro-life movement, Americans United for Life has paved the way for this historic drop in abortion through leading  the development of the intellectual architecture of commonsense legislation designed to protect women and children,  such as clinic regulations holding abortion providers to acceptable standards of care.

In 2009, close to 60 pro-life laws were enacted across the states, a marked increase from 2008 and that trend has continued as the passage of pro-life legislation at the state level has been steadily increasing. AUL’s legal strategy laid the groundwork through the launch of the annual publication of Defending Life, a compendium of model prolife legislation, which is now in its 7th year of publication and includes nearly 50 pieces of model state legislation.

“The news of the drop in abortion demonstrates that our efforts to protect women and children through commonsense regulations on abortion is working," said Dr. Yoest. "AUL will continue to promote such legislation.  In the past two years alone, over 45 pro-life laws across this country were enacted with AUL’s help.”

Abortion Backers Falsely Say Contraception Caused Abortion Drop

According to Dictionary.com, a policy wonk is defined as a person who studies a subject or issue in an excessively assiduous and thorough manner. When it was started years ago, the Washington Post Wonk Blog definitely fit that definition, despite its liberal slant.

U.S. Birth Rate Falls to Lowest Ever, Fewer Babies is Bad News

The Pew research center is out with new data showing the birth rate in the United States has fallen to its lowest point ever. Although Pew doesn’t say it, the abortion culture Roe v. Wade has produced is already causing problems, according to one pro-life opinion columnist.

Overall, the birth rate in the United States plunged 8 percent from 2007 to 2010. With new figures from the CDC showing the abortion numbers falling 5% from 2008-2009, the birth rate is not falling because more women are having abortions.

Parents are the Solution to Bullying, Not Government Legislation: Thinktank

A Canadian marriage and family think tank says that “actively engaged parents,” not government legislation, are the solution to bullying problems in schools.

“Families are an important part of the solution to bullying, a solution that has been overlooked for too long,” the report by the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada (IMFC) states.

The report, titled “Family responses to bullying: Why governments won’t stop bullying until families step up,” underscores what it calls the “serious limitations of anti-bullying legislation.” It notes that Alberta’s new anti-bullying legislation is another “wrongheaded solution” that only confirms the reality that adults are no longer present in the lives of children.

Senior researcher Peter Jon Mitchell said the Alberta legislation leaves it to kids to manage bullying by giving schools the authority to suspend complacent bystanders who witness bullying, even when the bullying occurs online and after school hours.

“It’s essentially saying that as adults, we’ve left the playground, and that it’s up to kids to police bullies on behalf of the school and parents,” said Mitchell to the National Post. “Certainly there might be room for bystanders’ [involvement], but I hope we’re not passing the buck to kids and saying, ‘Solve your own problems.’”

The IMFC says that the research shows that what is needed is a “family response” to bullying because “this is where real, effective change happens.”

“The bottom line is that bullying requires less emphasis on refereeing and more focus on authentic relationships between kids and adults,” said Mitchell.

The report highlights the findings of Canadian clinical and developmental psychologist Gordon Neufeld who argues that human beings naturally form hierarchical relationships. If adults aren’t involved in their children’s lives, however, they will naturally seek it among their peers, which sets the stage for bullying.

Neufeld writes that the “underlying problem [of bullying] is not the behaviour itself but the loss of the natural attachment hierarchy with adults in charge.”

The only way to “unmake” bullies, for Neufeld, is to get children and parents more involved.

The IMFC report points out that the “typical Canadian approach to anti-bullying programs assumes that a power imbalance is the root of the bully problem. The solutions often focus on democratization – imposing egalitarian values on childhood environments with the hope that students will develop these values among themselves.”

But according to Neufeld, this “works against human instinct to form hierarchical relationships that are evident even in observing young children at play.&

rdquo;

The IMFC has highlighted what role parents, educators and government must play in combating the bullying problem.

Parents must be “proactive in speaking to children about bullying.” They must “monitor screen time and establish limits and expectations around use of internet devices.” Finally, they must cultivate “primary attachment relationships with children and pursue an authoritative parenting style characterized by warm and caring communication with sufficient supervision and clearly expressed expectations and limits.”

Educators must “facilitate educational opportunities for school staff and parents, connecting stake holders with experts and resources.” They must “invite parents to partner in developing a school response to bullying behaviour.”

Governments must “legislate very cautiously and promote community based responses.” They must “consider parents as the primary educator when developing education policy, evaluating how policy initiatives empower parents.”

How Much Is That Human in the Window?

Comment: I have had recent conversations in which I was asked, "Human commodification — what does that mean?" or, "We don't have that here in America, do we?"  The first question is answered below, and some of the sad details of the answer to the second question follow.  While I cannot wish you, "Happy reading!", I can thank you for your interest.  And I do.
How Much Is That Human In The Window?  D. Joy Riley, M.D., M.A., Executive Director

Sadly uninformed by wisdom, I led my husband and one of our sons to a restaurant renowned for its sweet treats. I knew the address, and had been in the general area three decades ago. With the aid of the map app on my phone and some help from a stranger, we found the place. I had the address of the restaurant, and the map showed me the street layout. But neither the address nor the electronic map could prepare me for the sights my eyes, and the eyes of my companions, would see.   No, I would have needed wisdom to tell me what to avoid, and wisdom was lacking that day. It was shortly after noon. I had no idea that I would see humans for sale.

There was no price tag, but the young woman, who apparently lacked a clothing budget, appeared to be offered for money on that French Quarter street in New Orleans. At least, that is what the man who stood near her seemed to be suggesting. I do not think he was selling her outright; I suspect the money would be in exchange for her "time," after he took a cut for himself. Whether she would understand the term or not, that young woman was being "commodified."

Commodification is defined as "the inappropriate treatment of something as if it can be acquired or marketed like other commodities" (Collins English Dictionary – Complete and Unabridged © HarperCollins Publishers 1991, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2003). Human bodies, body parts, or activities can be commodified, and, increasingly, they are. Some recent prices include the following:

Sex – Collin Hansen reports, "Sex is cheap in Birmingham [England]. You can get pretty much whatever you want for between $5 and $15. Our neighbors are selling  their bodies for less than they could earn a couple blocks away working at McDonalds."

Kidneys – (according to the NY Daily News, 2009)

                        Seller: receives $2,000 – $10,000

                        Buyer: pays up to $180,000

The Human Body – Scott Carney, a journalist and author of The Red Market, "figures he's worth about $250,000, but that number isn't based on his savings or his assets; it's what Carney thinks his body would fetch if it were broken down into individual parts and sold on what he calls the 'red market.'" ("Blood, bones, and organs: the gruesome 'red market'," NPR Author Interview, 10 June 2011).

The National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 made it a crime in this country "for any person to knowingly acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any human organ for valuable consideration for use in human transplantation if the transfer affects interstate commerce." ("Buying and Selling Organs for Transplantation in the US: National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 (NOTA) Bans Buying and Selling," Medscape Internal Medicine Education, 2003).   Human hair, sperm, eggs, and blood products are exchanged for money in this country, as is the "rental" of a human womb, in the case of surrogacy.   Sex has been "for sale" for far longer. These are all commodifications of human beings: the exchange of human parts or functions for money.

Given that there is an open market for some human parts or functions, should there be an open market for solid organs as well? There are some who say a market might be an improvement, for it could be regulated.   Others contend that humans should not be sold, in whole or in part. Scott Carney writes that we humans are more than our "electrons and quarks," and names that essence of human life a "soul." He further states that the loss of that soul through exchange on the market, "transforms a body into a jumble of matter." (See excerpt of Scott Carney's book, The Red Market (New York: William Morrow, 2011) following "Blood, bones, and organs: the gruesome 'red market'," NPR Author Interview, 10 June 2011).

If money can buy human beings, "human parts," or "human functions," should it? This is a discussion we need to have. Should human beings be used as a "parts" or "functions" storehouse? What do you think?

The Tennessee Center for Bioethics & Culture has commissioned a local artist to produce a poster portraying many of the ways in which human beings are commodified. That poster is a good place to begin a discussion, and it can be found on our website at www.tennesseecbc.org

Take a look at it; click on the small poster to see a larger view of it. (A description and explanation of it is available on the website as well.)  Talk about it with a friend or neighbor.

Tell your family as well as your elected representatives what you think. Ideas, as well as policies, have consequences.  The best way forward requires more than an end point and a map; wisdom is sorely needed.

The Tennessee Center for Bioethics and Culture is dedicated to promoting human dignity in the face of challenges to what it means to be human, and to informing and equipping people to face the vital bioethics issues of the 21st Century.

Heroic Media Releases TV Ad Informing Women About ‘The Adoption Option’

Heroic Media, a pro-life organization that uses multimedia to present life-affirming resources to pregnant women, has released a new video called ‘The Adoption Option’ in honor of National Adoption Month.

Each year more than 6 million women become pregnant, and almost half of these are unplanned pregnancies, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Heroic Media seeks to inform women facing unexpected pregnancies, particularly those in their 20s, regarding the benefits of adoption. According to the Guttmacher Institute, women in their 20s currently account for more than half of all abortions.

“Adoption is the overlooked option; less than 1 percent of women with unplanned pregnancies choose adoption, but for every adoptive baby there are 30 to 40 couples waiting to welcome the child into their family,” said Marissa Cope, Director of Marketing, Communications and Research at Heroic Media. “Most women don’t understand the feeling of empowerment adoption brings. We believe this video will alert women to a possibility they may not have yet considered and ultimately save the lives of unborn children.”

The ‘Adoption Option’ video, which is posted online and has been airing exclusively on the Oxygen Network, features a pregnant woman explaining why she plans to place her unborn child for adoption, stating adoption will give her baby a better life than she can provide. Heroic Media has partnered with Bethany Christian Services, the nation’s largest adoption agency, to include a web address and 24/7 help-line phone number within the ad for women who would like more information or to speak with a counselor about adoption.

The Oxygen Network is home to “I’m Having Their Baby,” a reality-TV program that follows women experiencing unplanned pregnancies, as they go through the adoption process. The show is ranked 20th among all ad-supported cable entertainment networks in its key demographic of women 18-34, according to Nielsen.

Planned Parenthood Loses 5 More Centers as Affiliate Leaves the PP Fold

Planned Parenthood of South Central New York (PPSCNY) announced last week it is disaffiliating from Planned Parenthood because of the mandate by Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) that all affiliates must offer abortions in at least one location by 2013.

The affiliate applied for a waiver from the abortion requirement on September 25, and PPFA denied the waiver the same day, showing just how dedicated the abortion giant is to forcing affiliates to actively participate in abortion.

Planned Parenthood Gets Obamacare Funds to Push Sex on 9th Graders

Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia has received government funding that enables it to expand its systematic sexualization and degradation of 9th graders in the Newport News public schools with “risk reduction” sex education. The money comes from the $75 million pool set aside as a part of Obamacare to teach the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP).

The PREP money is setting students up for disaster as it enables Planned Parenthood and other organizations access to the most vulnerable youth across the nation. The curriculum being used in Newport News, Virginia, is distributed by ETR Associates, formerly the education department of Planned Parenthood of Santa Cruz. http://www.lifenews.com/2012/11/21/planned-parenthood-gets-obamacare-funds-to-push-sex-on-9th-graders/

Obama Wins–Planned Parenthood Closes Offices: the Ultimate Irony

Planned Parenthood will close many of its offices before the next presidential election.

I have been actively fighting Planned Parenthood since 1985. It’s clear to me that the American public is ready to throw Planned Parenthood into the dustbin of history. Since the mid-1990s, the citizens have been forcing Planned Parenthood to retreat.
More and more Planned Parenthood clinics are closing, despite the obscene amount of taxpayer funding it receives.

In 1992, Planned Parenthood had 922 clinics across the country. Bill Clinton was elected president that year. Planned Parenthood publicly announced a goal to have 2,000 clinics by the year 2000. It never made it. Planned Parenthood grew to 938 clinics in 1995. But it simply could not withstand the constant pressure from parents and pro-life advocates. Across the country, it began closing more clinics than it was opening.

In the year 2000, Planned Parenthood reported having 875 clinics—a far cry from its goal of 2,000.

Planned Parenthood was unable to meet its goal because of the collaborative work of three diverse groups of people—and a carefully worked-out plan of opposition. These three groups and that plan are still in place today. Together, they have continued to whittle away at Planned Parenthood’s empire. By the end of 2011, it had been forced to close another 126 clinics. Every clinic closing means there is a community that no longer has Planned Parenthood in its midst—a community that is free of the influence of this destructive organization. A community, like Amarillo, Texas, that has seen a dramatic drop in teenage pregnancies since Planned Parenthood closed its doors.

With the Obama victory, the fight against Planned Parenthood is going to escalate. As the groups oppos

ed to Planned Parenthood realize the enormous amount of taxpayer money that is funneling into PP’s coffers, they are going to become incredibly active.

The three groups of people who you will see rise up in greater numbers across the country are:

    1. Pro-life activists who understand that Planned Parenthood runs the largest abortion chain in the country. That it kills, every week, twice the number of innocent human beings who died on September 11, 2001.

    2. Parents who become aware of the threat that Planned Parenthood is to their children. The parents who fight Planned Parenthood come in all stripes—progressive, conservative, black, white, Hispanic, and Asian. Many actually consider themselves “pro-choice,” but do not want Planned Parenthood anywhere near their children.

    3. Fiscal conservatives. They become very motivated when they realize the obscene amount of taxpayer money going to Planned Parenthood. The fact that PP received almost one-half billion dollars last year—and will probably be approaching the billion dollar mark in taxpayer money very quickly—gets them rightfully upset.

Add to all this that American Life League’s STOPP project has developed a proven plan for defeating Planned Parenthood—a plan that has worked well for two decades and was enhanced three years ago with fantastic results—and you have the right mixture for a successful movement.

Planned Parenthood has 749 clinic locations in the United States, and one out of every three of them has a regularly scheduled protest outside its doors. The American public does not want Planned Parenthood around and people are willing to stand in front of its locations to let everyone know.

Planned Parenthood is celebrating the victory of Barack Obama. It believes it will have four years to expand its influence and its profitability. It is already implementing the initial stages of its plans with money it is receiving from the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

But the opposing army is ready—and it is an army that will use peaceful and prayerful tactics. It will cause such discontent with Planned Parenthood that PP will have no choice but to close its clinics—one after another.

With the expert leadership of American Life League, and many other groups, the fight against Planned Parenthood will continue in the streets. It will be in the churches and schools of Main Street America. It will be in the legislative chambers in counties, cities, and state houses all across the land.

By the time the next presidential election comes around, Planned Parenthood will be closing clinics at a fast rate and wondering how it will ever survive. Don’t believe it? Check back every few months and we’ll let you know how we’re doing.

Planned Parenthood Affiliate in New York State Quits When Mandated to Perform Abortions

Planned Parenthood of South Central New York based in the New York cities of Binghamton and Oneonta has quit its affiliation with the national Planned Parenthood abortion business because it mandates that its chapters do abortions.

Preferring to focus on family planning efforts, the chapter is breaking off of Planned Parenthood and renaming itself — preferring not to submit itself to a mandate that all chapters have clinics that do abortions that Planned Parenthood wants in place next year.
