Study Claiming Abortion Safer Than Birth Used Faulty Data

Hundreds of news articles appeared this week claiming, once again, that the best medical evidence shows that abortion is safer than childbirth. The rash of articles were all tied to a blatant piece of propaganda published in Obstetrics and Gynecologyby Dr. David Grimes, an abortion provider and chief propagandist for “medical proof” of abortion’s safety.

The new study repeats the same discredited practice of simply comparing nationally reported maternal mortality rates with Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported deaths associated with abortion.

Sounds reasonable, until you learn that there is no accurate or formal mechanism for reporting abortion-related deaths.

Indeed, the rules regarding completion of death certificates specifically exclude identifying abortion as a cause of death.

At least in part, this is why CDC officials have admitted that maternal mortality rates and abortion mortality rates “are conceptually different and are used by the CDC for different public health purposes.”

Abortion Businesses in New Mexico Injure Women With No Oversight

A shocking number of medical emergencies at two Albuquerque abortion clinics over the past few months have raised questions about clinic safety and who is responsible for oversight. After months of investigation, pro-life groups have determined that abortion clinics often operate in regulatory gaps and actively seek to “fly under the radar,” as one regulator put it. This has created a public safety crisis in New Mexico.

A total of 14 calls for emergency medical assistance were placed to 911 dispatchers by Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO) and the University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health (UNMCRH) over a 35-month time frame between November, 2008, and September, 2011. Three were placed from the UNMCRH while, alarmingly, eleven of the calls for help originated from SWO.

Complaints were filed with the New Mexico Medical Board (NMMB) against the known abortionists who work at those clinics by representatives of Project Defending Life and Operation Rescue. However, the NMMB is only responsible for oversight of licensed physicians and is not responsible for oversight of the abortion clinic itself.

“That means trash could be piled to the ceiling inside those clinics, and the NMMB would not have the authority to do anything about it,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation. “The clinics themselves are never inspected or held to any standard. That creates the potential for a Gosnell-like ‘house of horrors’ to operate directly under the nose of regulators.”

Conversations with Department of Health regulators confirmed Newman’s concerns.

Doctors Office and Abortion Exemptions

Southwestern Women’s Options, an abortion clinic specializing in risky late-term procedures, is not licensed as an Ambulatory Surgical Center, which would ensure that the clinic was inspected and met the same standards that other out-patient surgical centers much maintain. Instead, it is listed as a “Doctor’s Office” under the name of the 75-year old owner of the facility, Curtis Boyd, a Texas abortionist who admits to having done illegal “back-alley” abortions prior to Roe v. Wade. This designation qualifies him for a license exemption.

Boyd’s clinic conducts a minimal amount of lab work and is licensed in New Mexico as a laboratory. The most recent inspection survey issued in 2009 for the SWO lab showed multiple violations with faulty test results detected for pregnancy and for the Rh factor that resulted in the need to contact patients with the news that they needed to have their tests redone. While every two years, the laboratory portion of his business is inspected by the Department of Health, the surgical side of the business has never been inspected. No one has ever checked to see if Boyd owns a crash cart, has emergency protocols in place, or even if he bothers to sterilize his surgical instruments.

According to Rick Pangborn, Medical Care Program Director with the Department of Health, clinics that must be licensed as Ambulatory Surgical Centers are those with an operating room that accommodates outpatient surgical procedures, which require post-surgical monitoring of patients in a separate recovery room.

However, Pangborn emphasized that even though Boyd’s SWO meets those criteria, abortions are among the few procedures that cannot trigger the need for an Ambulatory Surgical Center license in New Mexico.

“This clinic operates in the shadowy gap created by an extremely compartmentalized regulatory system in New Mexico,” said Tara Shaver of Project Defending Life. “Each regulatory agency is only responsible for a small portion oversight, and abortion procedures seem to give clinics special exemption from oversight. Abortion clinics can easily fly under the radar by claiming to be doctor’s offices. This designation ensures that they are never inspected or regulated. Maybe that is why we are seeing life-threatening medical emergencies at these clinics at the rate of one every couple of months.”

UNMCRH Completely “Under the Radar”

According to Pangborn, there is no record at all of any kind of license for the UNM Center for Reproductive Health, the other abortion clinic that has experienced a recent series of medical emergencies. There is no record of UNMCRH ever having been inspected by any state regulator. Pangborn told Shaver that he was under the impression that UNMCRH provided different services than Southwestern Women’s Options, when both are in fact primarily abortion clinics.

Planned Parenthood is the only clinic in Albuquerque with no record of 911 calls. It is licensed as a Diagnostic Treatment Facility, which provides for the clinic to bill insurance and Medicaid for services even though they were not supplied by a licensed physician. Planned Parenthood is not required to meet the standards that Ambulatory Surgical Centers must meet.

Lack of Oversight Creates Dangerous Climate

“If clinics are not required to meet specific health and safety standards, they usually don’t,” said Newman. “New Mexico’s lack of standards for abortion clinics has created a dangerous climate where women can be subjected to any manner of substandard or negligent practices and can never be held accountable for it. Fourteen women — that we are aware of — have paid for this lack of oversight with serious bodily injury and it is only a matter of time before one pays for it with her life.”

Tara Shaver agreed. “The fourteen 911 calls that we uncovered show that something is seriously wrong with how abortion clinics in New Mexico operate and the lack of oversight,” she said.

“We now have information that the UNMCRH is no longer calling 911 for medical emergencies so that there is no public record of how many injuries are actually occurring there. This places women at additional risk. Something must change on the state level in order to protect women from these abortion clinics that have run amok outside the bounds of any kind of regulatory oversight.”

Refuting the Claim Women Will Resort to Coat Hanger Abortions

To mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v Wade, some pro-abortion activists took to the streets to celebrate. One sign that caught my eye depicted a bent coat hanger with the words “Never Again” underneath.

This sign was obviously in reference to the oft argued idea that if abortion was ever made illegal, thousands of women would die from unsafe abortions.

Here is the response to this argument:

1) Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a former abortion doctor and one of the founders of the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws, said that these statistics were made up.

“In NARAL, we generally emphasized the frame o

f the individual case, not the mass statistics, but when we spoke of the latter it was always 5,000 to 10,000 deaths a year. I confess that I knew that the figures were totally false and I suppose that others did too if they stopped to think of it. But in the ‘morality’ of our revolution, it was a useful figure, widely accepted, so why go out of our way to correct it with honest statistics? The overriding concern was to get the laws eliminated, and anything within reason that had to be done was permissible.”

2) There was very little illegal abortion death before Roe v Wade.

According to the Center for Disease Control in 1972 the death rate from abortions was only 39 in the entire country. These deaths were still a tragedy, and could have been avoided if the mother had chosen life, but it remains clear that the numbers are nowhere near the number that pro-abortion advocates would have you believe.

Also, in 1960, Dr. Mary Calderone, the medical director of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America revealed that, “about 90 percent of all illegal abortions are presently being done by physicians…Whatever trouble arises usually arises from self-induced abortions, which comprise approximately 8 percent, or with the very small percentage that go to some kind of non-medical abortionist…So remember…abortion, whether therapeutic or illegal, is in the main no longer dangerous, because it is being done well by physicians.” Planned Parenthood admitted BEFORE Roe v Wade, that illegal abortions were only widely dangerous when they were self-induced.

3) Abortion is not safe now.

Almost every week there is at least one article on LifeNews.com reporting that a woman has suffered a botched abortion and 911 was called.

Here are just a few examples from the past year:

    01/22/12- Two women suffering from abortion related injuries in Alabama have to be physically carried down a trash filled alley behind an abortion clinic by paramedics, as there was no door big enough to accommodate a gurney.
    01/11/12- A woman in Mississippi wins a $600,000 malpractice judgment after a failed abortion attempt left her with a life threatening infection.
    01/09/12- A 28 year old woman is rushed to a Virginia hospital after a botched abortion left her with uncontrolled bleeding.
    12/26/11- 911 is called after a California woman is injured in a botched abortion.
    08/15/11- Operation Rescue obtains 911 calls regarding EIGHT women who required medical attention after botched abortions in Albuquerque, NM. One of the women died.
    04/18/11- A 16 year old girl is rushed to a Washington hospital after a botched abortion.
    01/11/11 – Boston paramedics are called to assist a woman suffering from complications due to a botched abortion.
    01/19/11- Abortion practitioner Kermit Gosnell is charged with murder in the death of his patient, Karnamay Mongar.

Through these three simple arguments we can clearly see that the so called “Coat Hanger Argument” has no basis in truth and is easily refutable. At the end of the day, one fact remains – Abortion ENDS lives, not saves them.

Practitioner Settles Case of Woman Killed in Failed Abortion

The pro-life group Operation Rescue has uncovered new documentation in its new AbortionDocs.org project uncovering cases of botched abortions and medical and legal negligence by abortion practitioners.

In the case, which has never before been revealed publicly, Nevada-based abortion practitioner Adam Vincent Levy, who works at A-Z Women’s Center in Las Vegas, settled a case in which he killed a woman a few years ago in a failed abortion.

According to public record documents obtained by AbortionDocs.org, Levy paid out $20,000 last year in a case alleging his negligence in the death of a patient during a botched abortion in 2007. In 2007, Levy paid out a whopping $6 million to settle a 1995 case brought by the family of a brain-damaged child who suffered injuries as the result of Levy’s misinterpretation of ultrasound findings.

In 2004, Levy settled a personal injury case for $7,500 after he allegedly inflicted second and third degree burns to a patient’s private organs by inserting a hot weighted speculum during surgery.

In spite of all this, Levy has never been disciplined by medical regulators. In fact, he continues to train abortion practitioners at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas even though his abortion practices have proven deadly to at least one patient, says OR president Troy Newman.

“Abortionists have been able to hide their dirt until now. Thanks to AbortionDocs.org … the truth is [finally] available to everyone. We are doing a public service by putting the documentation into the public forum so women can be warned about abortion abusers like Levy, who despite killing a woman, has flown under the radar of public and regulatory scrutiny.”

Abortion Business in Illinois Killed Patient in Failed Abortion, Didn’t Perform CPR… More

A recent Associated Press article by writer Carla Johnson reported that some abortion businesses in Illinois have gone up to 15 years without an inspection, and that several other abortion sites in the state—including all of those run by Planned Parenthood—aren’t licensed or inspected by the state at all.

In response to inquiries from Johnson, Pro-Life Action League Executive Director Eric Scheidler provided numerous documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests regarding abortion clinic inspections. He was also quoted in the article:

… activist Eric Scheidler, executive director of the Chicago-based Pro-Life Action League, said Illinois is “one of the most pro-abortion states in the nation” and he believes it gave the clinics [sic] “a pass.” The state has shown “a systematic unwillingness to step away from the ideology and look at these facilities objectively,” he said, calling for more stringent inspections…

    "… In 2011, Illinois inspectors visited all nine licensed abortion clinics that are defined as pregnancy termination centers, a category that limits them to first-trimester abortions [sic] * and no other procedures."

It was these inspections that led to the closing of the notorious Northern Illinois Women’s Center in Rockford.

More Unsafe Clinics [sic] Come to Light

These inspections also resulted i

n a state order issued October 21 prohibiting Women’s Aid Clinic in Lincolnwood from performing surgical abortions.

And although the article reports that Women’s Aid is closed, phone calls made to the facility confirm that it is still, in fact, open, but it is only able to do medical abortions—i.e., the abortion pill commonly known as RU-486. (Inexplicably, however, the Women’s Aid website still indicates that it offers surgical abortions.)

So Women’s Aid is still operating, only now without a license (to perform surgical abortions), which it surrendered to avoid paying a $36,000 fine. And thus, it will now no longer be inspected by the state.
Clinic Owner Blames Victim of Malpractice

According to the article, the fine was for “violations including the clinic’s failure to perform CPR on a patient who died after a procedure [emphasis added].”

What was the response of Women’s Aid’s owner, Larissa Rowansky?

   "Its owner told the AP her clinic was safe and she felt victimized by the surprise inspection after 15 years."

Yes, you read that correctly: after a woman died following a legal abortion, the abortion facility’s owner is claiming victimhood…

Notorious Rockford, Illinois, abortionist Christensen frequenting Planned Parenthood in Madison, Wisconsin; PP in Columbia, Missouri

It has been reported to us by pro-life forces on the ground that notorious late-term abortionist Dennis Christensen has appeared at Planned Parenthood’s abortion facility on Orin Road in Madison, Wisconsin, at least three times in recent weeks, prompting speculation that he is committing late-term abortions at the facility.

Christensen took over sole ownership of the Northern Illinois Women’s Center abortion SITE in Rockford, Illinois, in 2004. The Illinois Department of Public Health ordered an emergency suspension of the Rockford clinic’s license Sept. 30, 2011, because of health and safety violations observed during on-site inspections in June and September. The facility has been closed since Sept. 30.

Upon permanent closure in January 2012, a statement was released which read, in part: “The staff is very saddened by the closing. We are not done grieving this loss and still are struggling with surrendering to the idea that we will not be able to do this work tomorrow or the day after.”

The abortion center had been in business for 40 years and admitted to more than 50,000 abortions.

The Rockford mill is described by John Jansen, on the website of Pro-Life Action League, as “[a] creepy looking place that doesn’t sterilize their instruments and has bizarre window displays featuring signs of Jesus giving the middle finger and saying, ‘Even Jesus hates you.’” The window displays included such atrocities as a rubber chicken hanging over the Corpus of Christ on a crucifix.

Pro-life activists continue to keep watch for Christensen at Planned Parenthood’s facility in Madison. We will keep you apprised as this breaking story develops.

Meanwhile in Missouri, according to news reports, Planned Parenthood in Columbia will resume abortions in February. The facility says it suspended surgical abortions in September, when the former abortionist left.

Trends in the use of contraceptive methods and voluntary interruption of pregnancy in the Spanish population during 1997-2007.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to acquire information about the use of contraceptive methods in order to reduce the number of elective abortions.

STUDY DESIGN: Since 1997, representative samples of Spanish women of childbearing potential (15-49 years) have been surveyed by the Daphne Team every 2 years to gather data of contraceptive methods used.

RESULTS: During the study period, 1997 to 2007, the overall use of contraceptive methods increased from 49.1% to 79.9%. The most commonly used method was the condom (an increase from 21% to 38.8%), followed by the pill (an increase from 14.2% to 20.3%). Female sterilization and IUDs decreased slightly and were used by less than 5% of women in 2007.

The elective abortion rate increased from 5.52 to 11.49 per 1000 women.

CONCLUSIONS: The factors responsible for the increased rate of elective abortion need further investigation.

Pastor Luke Robinson of the Quinn Chapel AME Church in Frederick, Maryland, gave the final speech on the Mall before marchers dispersed for the annual walk to the Supreme Court. He was joined on the platform by other community leaders who held signs proclaiming, “Stop Black Genocide” and “Personhood for All.”

Just minutes earlier, Rev. Walter Hoye II of the National Black Pro-life Coalition drew attention to the disparate impact abortion has on black Americans. “Even though we are only 12 percent of the population, we account for over 30 percent of all abortion in this country,” he said.

Pastor Robinson, who spoke for about 25 minutes, said one-third of all aborted children “are black like me. They are black like the president in the White House, Mr. Obama. But I am sorry to say today that they will never have the chance to be president of the United States.”

He added that, in New York City, 60 percent of unborn black children are aborted. Such a high rate means most blacks in that city are not being born.

“On this platform and at this rally today are African-Americans…our hearts are heavy. Our voice needs to be clearly heard for justice,” he said. “We are troubled because our country is increasingly embracing the culture of death.”

In a powerful speech that was often interrupted by applause, Pastor Robinson said abortion is “a tragedy in America. It’s a tragedy in the African-American community. It i

s genocidal. It is the destruction of a people.”

He called Lila Rose’s undercover work – which exposed Planned Parenthood accepting donations specifically to abort black babies – “a wake-up call.”

He challenged his fellow black leaders – many of whom support federal funding for abortion – to stand up against the high rate of abortion in their own community. “Where is the voice of President Obama? Where is the voice of Jesse Jackson? Where is the voice of Al Sharpton? Where is the voice of the Black Congressional Caucus?…Where is the voice of the NAACP on this issue? Where is the voice of the African-American church on this issue? They all silent.”

These “so-called freedom fighters,” he said, are nothing more than “instruments of the culture of death.”

“They want us to be silent because the president is a black man,” but the president’s administration “is leading this nation and especially the African-Americans to absolute destruction,” said Robinson.

He noted that many, such as Jesse Jackson, once opposed abortion and even spoke at the 1977 March for Life, before they became involved in Democratic Party politics. “Could it possibly be that the billion dollar abortion business have bought them out?” he asked.

Black church leaders have the responsibility to revive their history of peaceful activism, he said, quoting Martin Luther King Jr.‘s Letter from a Birmingham Jail: “We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did was ‘legal,’ and everything that the Hungarian freedom fighters did was’ illegal.’”

“The abortion industry and the so-called pro-choice are lying, and we are dying,” he said.

Robinson’s closing prayer asked that America would throw “a great retirement party” for pro-abortion politicians after this year’s elections.

Abortionist James S Pendergraft injected toxic doses of meds into the hearts of fetuses in utero, and told their moms to finish up the job at a legitimate hospital, or other facility.  This way the abortion would be counted as a fetal demise, miscarraige, etc., and the mom would avoid the abortion stigma as well as much of the cost.

Ella, (ulipristal acetate) was put on to the market as a morning after pill, but the abortionists will be doing a similar thing with this drug, using it off label, and in increased doses, to cause fetal demise.

It’s another abortion pill, but without the regulatory controls applied to mifepristone,  RU486, its chemical analog.

For the time being,  Pendergraft is in hot water for practicing with a suspended license in Washington DC.

An African Speaks Against Planned Parenthood's Plan to Increase Abortions on the Continent by 82 Percent

Recently we told you about International Planned Parenthood Federation's strategic plan, which entails increasing abortion "services" in Africa by 82 percent by 2015.

Subsequently, Human Life International's newsletter featured a response to IPPF's plan, authored by Emil Hagamu, an African citizen of Tanzania, and HLI's regional coordinatorfor English-speaking Africa. We offer you some very enlightening excerpts from the response, which can be read in its entirety here:
 
Since IPPF came to Africa some 50 years ago, abortion has been their number one agenda. They initially came with concerns of "helping" us with our population "problems" – problems that we did not know that we had since most African nations are less densely populated than the countries of those who were telling us there were too many of us. This was before they changed their description of their "population control services" to "reproductive health services." …

. . . Abortion is neither part of our African culture, nor a priority need of the African people; and to be honest, it is deeply insulting when Westerners try to tell us and the world what we need.

In the English-speaking region of Africa where I coordinate pro-life activities, we are attempting to dismantle the infrastructure being built by organizations like IPPF and the United Nations Population Fund. We are educating our brothers and sisters through collaborative information sharing and regional conferences about the fact that IPPF is not concerned with our health, but with the fact that we still have children, and that makes them very uncomfortable.

What we need in Africa is better education for our children based on sound intellectual and moral values; good roads to transport our agricultural products; reliable electrical power to accelerate development; clean water; and above all, Africans need respect from people in the West, not condescension and demands that we stop having more children. We do not want our continent to be a dumping ground for contraceptives and condoms; we do not need to be sterilized; we do not need abortion.

IPPF’s plans are deplorable, and I pray that Western governments will stop funding their efforts to eliminate more and more of the African people.

Planned Parenthood’s plans, left unchecked, will annihilate the African population and destroy African families whose very lives depend on their families. Taiwan’s Crackdown on Sex-Selective Abortion Showing Marginally Positive Results
A report from Taiwanese health authorities says that a crackdown on illegal sex-selective abortions prevented the deaths of nearly 1,000 female unborn babies in 2011.

squo;s health authorities began warning doctors last year that they could have their licenses revoked if they were found guilty of committing sex-selective abortions.

Taiwan’s abortion law stipulates that a woman can undergo an induced abortion “if the pregnancy adversely affects the psychological or physical health of the woman or her family life.” However, sex-selective abortion is illegal.

“The strict measures have paid off,” Lee Tsui-feng, an official at the Bureau of the Health Promotion, told AFP.

Department of Health figures showed Taiwan’s gender ratio at birth from 2004 to 2010 was between 109 and 112 males for every 100 females, compared to a natural ratio of about 106 males to 100 females. The government agency estimated that this has resulted in up to 3,000 missing female babies each year.

However, figures from 2011 showed that 108 males babies were born for every 100 female babies. “That’s the same as 993 female fetuses saved last year,” Lee said.

The Bureau of the Health Promotion observed that the slight decrease in female feticide is a positive step toward reducing a looming massive gender imbalance, though Lee said it may take another four or five years to weed out the illegal sex-selective abortion practice entirely.

Taiwan has one of the lowest total fertility rates in Asia, at 0.91 children per woman, and an astonishingly high abortion rate, estimated at about three abortions to every one live birth

Dr. Lue Hung-chi, professor of paediatrics at the National Taiwan University College of Medicine, estimated that 300,000 to 500,000 abortions are carried out in Taiwan each year, while only 166,000 babies were born in 2010 on the island nation of about 23 million, according to a 2011 report by the Asia Sentinel.

Hungary Passes Law Promoting New Pro-Life Constitution

As one of the eastern European nations seeing high abortion rates, a pro-life Hungary would be a huge victory for women and unborn children. Susan Yoshihara of C-Fam Institute, says that is happening.

Hungarian leaders have passed a law protecting the traditional family, defying ongoing criticism that their new constitution would curtail abortion…

The new law says … “Embryonic and foetal life shall be entitled to protection and respect from the moment of conception,” and the state should encourage “homely circumstances” for child care. It obliges the media to respect marriage and parenting and assigns parents, rather than the State, primary responsibility for protecting the rights of the child. The law enumerates responsibilities for minors, including respect and care for elderly parents.

The purpose of the law is “to create a predictable and safe regulatory environment for family protection and the promotion of family welfare, and to enforce the Fundamental Law,” the nation’s new constitution, which came into force on January 1st and was passed by a vote of 262-44 last April.
