Thirteen women died following a series of unhygienic sterilizations operations at a sterilization camp in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
Dr. Gupta, once honored by the state for his sterilization work, was arrested on charges of negligence, but5 denied any misconduct and blamed authorities for the tragedy.
He sterilized all 83 women in the clinic within three (3) hours, 2-5 minutes per operation.
India regularly conducts sterilization drives, and mass sterilization camps are most common in the poorer Indian states. Official statistics indicate that 1,434 people died from sterilization between 2003 and 2012.
