May is Teen Pregnancy Awareness Month: What Can Each of Us Do?

According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, nearly 3 in 10 girls will become pregnant before the age of 20. In 2012, 305,388 teens (ages 15-19) gave birth. About 18% of women obtaining abortions are teenagers (i.e. about 200,000) [http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_induced_abortion.html]. Due to these high numbers, many people are rightly concerned about the need for education and resources for these young women. How do we prevent teen pregnancy from happening in the first place? How do we teach teens to be responsible in their relationships so that they may make healthy decisions (for their bodies and their hearts)? How do we provide resources that will support a teen in her decision to choose life for her child? May is Teen Pregnancy Awareness Month. In May, students are encouraged to get involved in efforts to educate their peers. We encourage you to focus on abstinence education and to teach your peers the importance of mutual respect in relationships. Here are a few ideas you can do to raise awareness in your community – even beyond May: Talk to your younger family members about their relationships. Remember: This doesn’t have to be an awkward conversation! They may prefer having this conversation with you than with another adult. Start by asking, “How are you and ____ doing?” and let the conversation flow from there. Encourage them to commit to respecting themselves and their girlfriend/boyfriend. Support them in their good decisions. Offer loving advice for those who may be involved in unhealthy decisions. *Last but not least, be a good role model for your younger siblings and cousins. Educate your...

Most Teens WAIT: abstinencefirst.com

Contrary to popular belief, most teens are actually NOT sexually active (even though they may talk actively!) and of those who are, most regret their choice and wish they had waited. In fact, a national survey indicates nearly all teens (93%) said that they should be given a “strong message” to abstain from sex. Approximately 30 state and federally funded abstinence education organizations in IL have joined forces to communicate the importance of abstinence education for today’s youth.   This larger entity is now known as the Illinois Abstinence Coalition. http://www.abstinencefirst.comAND a toll-free number (1.877.TEENS-IL) (1.877.833.6745), where they can find information on abstinence education in their local...

Gary is a Risk Elimination educator in Georgia. Youth Development Generally, 80-87% of the students of any given student class are movable and open to listen to a presentation about abstinence & chastity. About 13% of the students are not favorable. They may be “nice”, but they don’t agree with abstinence and will become, or remain, sexually active. Character, Morals, and Values Abstinence needs to be added to the list of character traits taught to our children: “Character is who we are when no one else is looking.” “No IV drugs, no sex till marriage – AIDS would be wiped out in one generation.” Gaylan Cole, M.D. [CDC epidemiologist] & George Smith, M.D. It costs about $30,000 – $50,000 per year for medication for one AIDS patient.  We need to get the message to kids that it’s very simple to avoid AIDS! AIDS is acquired – stay away from sexual activity –> avoid the risk –> avoid the disease…   Teen Sex Scene The average male sex partner is an adult, more than 3 years older than the girl. Actually, 70% of...

We only mentioned 5 – remember there are at least 8 major ones and at least 50 known STDs floating around out there. You can be sure there are several right here in your own school – in every school. It’s not just “low-life” who get STDs. Every one who is having sex is fair game. Play now, pay later… It may seem hard to say “no” to sex.  But wait till you say “yes”! Then your problems REALLY begin! Worry about STDs and pregnancy; worry about keeping your partner; jealousy, envy, anger, lack of trust. Lots of stuff to make you really miserable. And remember [use Alert! Transparency]:       We DO NOT KNOW the long-term effects of most of these STDs because they have not been around long enough to study them for 20-30 years;      If a person has 1 STD, it is very likely that the person has MORE THAN ONE STD;      The chance of acquiring HIV INCREASES DRAMATICALLY if the person already has an STD such as HPV, Herpes, Gonorrhea, or Chlamydia [because the STD provides an opening into the body]       “The Pill”, "The Shot", and "The Patch” provide NO PROTECTION AGAINST ANY STD – they may actually increase the chances of females getting...

Abstinence is For Lovers!ã Elsewhere in this web section, a 45-minute presentation on abstinence is available. What follows here is a 3 day to 5 day abstinence presentation, to serve as an aid to you when you get the opportunity to go to schools/clubs for longer periods, OR to use for your own children at home. Some of this material is the same as for the shorter talk, just more in-depth. Other topics, such as dating and how-to develop healthy long-term relationships, will be included in this presentation. As mentioned in the 45-minute presentation, the most important thing you need to get across is to let them know YOU SINCERELY CARE ABOUT THEM as unique individuals — their health, their lives!! Stress this throughout your presentation. Four other quick points: 1) walk among them — let them know you are not afraid of them;     2) pull them into the conversation — ask them questions to keep them involved;                                                                                 3) talk fast! keep things moving, or you’ll lose them, and be theatrical — put on a show! Use your arms, change...
